In the story “Narcissus and Echo” two main lessons are being taught. The first of these lessons is honesty. In the story, Echo distracts Hera from her husbands cheating. Echo does this by engaging in long conversations, allowing the nymphs to run away. This is being dishonest because Echo knows about Zeus’ affairs and helps him continue with them. Eventually, Hera finds out what Echo is doing and punishes her. Echo’s punishment is that she can only repeat the words that others speak, and cannot speak for herself. Echo learned her lesson because she was never able to speak what was on her mind. The second lesson learned is that one should not be too proud of oneself and ones accomplishments. Narcissus was a man who was very handsome, therefor had a lot of woman after him. He scorned them all away though, including Echo. This infuriated Echo, so she prayed to the gods that Narcissus could feel the pain that Narcissus made her feel. The gods responded to her request by having Narcissus fall in love with himself. Soon later, Narcissus comes across a pond and sees his reflection for the first time. He immediately falls in love. Sadly, all of his attempts to engage with his reflection are worthless. Every time he tried to kiss or grasp his “lover” the water would ripple, causing it to disappear. Narcissus learned his lesson because eventually he found out that all he was seeing was his reflection, not another person. Then, due to the lack of food and water because he never left the pond, he died. The two lessons taught in Narcissus and Echo were to always be honest and to not become obsessed with ones image.
