Emily Dickinson is one of the few poets that I can relate and empathize with. I find her poetry to be extremely moving and touching. Her diction or brevity in the poem, “Success is Counted Sweetest” is remarkable and meaningful. Like any other reader would do, I began to read the poem from beginning of line one to the end of line 1. I read it about three to four times before it actually started to click. Her first two lines, “Success is counted sweetest By those who ne’er succeed.” is a mere summary of this poem. In the non poetic terms, all it means is, those who don’t succeed tend to appreciate success better then those who always do. What intrigued me was her choice of the phrase “counted sweetest”. No one can really say success is sweet like a candy, but she chose sweet because it fit better than any other word. For example, the word best would sound horrible in that sentence and not give it the brightness of sweet.


Her next few lines, “To comprehend a nectar Requires sorest need.” is an exceptional ending to that stanza. What I came to find out is that the word nectar actually can mean triumph. So when I substituted triumph into that sentence the whole poem turned around and made complete sense. It doesn’t take to much to comprehend the meaning of triumph, especially if you are the one looking from the outside, not the one triumphing.








Her second stanza has a lot of diction in it. Line six, “Who took the Flag today”, can be interpreted as flag being a victor or win. Instead of leaving it so shallow and adding win, Dickinson put more thought into and added a more meaningful word to it. I definitely think she did not want to ever leave the poem clueless so it couldn’t be understood, so that it why I believe her diction in this stanza is clear and precise.


Her last stanza begins to sum up the poem and also works in well with the first stanza. “As he defeated - dying- On whose forbidden ear” her brevity in this sentence is outstanding. The loser is dying, its straight forward, but the second line, “On...ear” is a little confusing until you read on. That second line comes into play with the last two, “The distant...clear!”. Although the victory is gone (or in the distance) it still strains on the defeated one’s ear, because he/she has not felt victory. As we learned, the word “burst” was substituted with break, two words which can mean the same but can have various meanings when put into a poem. The “burst” of the triumph makes it seem as if it is everlasting, not just broken which can be easily repaired, but burst which can take a much longer time to re-gather or achieve.
