Death of a salesman is about the American dream and one middle-aged man’s failure of it. Willy Loman is that salesman, who wants to live the dream. He has managed to create his own reality he does not live his life in the state of being actual or true. Willy Loman has created his own illusionary world in which he has an erroneous perception of reality. He sees only what he want to see and also tries to convince everyone else around him of the truth in his illusionary world.

The theme of illusion and reality is evident throughout the entire play and eventually leads to Willy’s downfall. He believes that being well liked and personally attractive will put you ahead in the business world. Although Willy has neither of these qualities, he instills this belief into his two sons Biff and Happy. Willy spends his life in an illusion, constantly believing that he is a great man who is popular and successful. That delusion is prominent when Willy took his dreams too far and told his wife Linda that he would walk into his boss’s office and ask for the office job. Willy knew what the answer was going to be but his disconnection with reality made him asks for too much. Willy wants to become successful easily like his brother Ben did. He is a dreamer who is full of pride unable to accept the fact that his dreams of being a successful salesman will never come true.

Willy’s dreams have a negative impact on Biff and Happy throughout their lives.

Biff becomes the product of his fathers’ dreams and admiration. He values being well liked and sees little point in being honest. In fact he is far from reality he thinks he is well liked when in reality he is not. Biff eventually realizes that his father is a dreamer he has followed his father’s values all his life and now finds them fake. He learns that he doesn’t have any dreams of his own and that his whole life was one ridiculous lie.

Happy’s life has been greatly influenced by Willy’s dreams even more so than Biffs. He works as an assistant to an assistant but he represents himself as someone who is much more important than what he is. Just as Willy believes he is not a dime a dozen and that the name Loman will be respected and well liked by many people. He dreams they will become wealthy and that he will be a successful businessman. Willy wanted Biff and Happy to become what he had not become. He always told them to do stuff the way he would do it if he had the opportunity not realizing that his way didn’t work.

Willy Loman is a man with many dreams. Most of his dreams would cause more damage to his life than success. He became unable to see how his family had become delusional because he became so obsessed with living the dream. Willy did not have the talent to be a successful salesman; he struggled to become something he was not. Willy often lapses into a flashback and appears to be reliving conversations and events that occurred years ago. This is itself is Willy’s inability to see reality. He is constantly lapsing in and out of reality. Ultimately, Willy’s inability to move away from the illusionary world he created became the cause of his down fall. Willy tragically ends his life by committing suicide leaving his family with sadness and sorrow.
