researchers found that smokers reaped less quality-of-life benefits than nonsmokers

smoking makes a difference in general health perception, pain, social function

Smoke from cigars, cigarettes, and pipes harms your body in many ways, but it is especially harmful to the lungs of a person with asthma. Tobacco smoke is a powerful trigger of asthma symptoms

When a person inhales tobacco smoke, irritating substances settle in the moist lining of the airways. These substances can cause an attack in a person who has asthma.

In addition, tobacco smoke damages tiny hair-like structures in the airways called cilia. Normally, cilia sweeps dust and mucus out of the airways. Tobacco smoke damages cilia so they are unable to work, allowing dust and mucus to accumulate in the airways.

Smoke also causes the lungs to make more mucus than normal. As a result, even more mucus can build up in the airways, triggering an attack.

Second-hand smoke is the combination of smoke from a burning cigar or cigarette and smoke exhaled by a smoker.

Inhaling second-hand smoke, also called passive smoke or environmental tobacco smoke, from another person may be even more harmful than actually smoking. Thats because the smoke that burns off the end of a cigar or cigarette contains more harmful substances (tar, carbon monoxide, nicotine, and others) than the smoke inhaled by the smoker.

Second-hand smoke is especially harmful to people who already have asthma. When a person with asthma is exposed to second-hand smoke, he or she is more likely to experience the wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath associated with asthma.

A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that the number one risk factor for heart disease was smoking. Women who smoked 15 or more cigarettes a day had a five times greater risk of developing heart disease than nonsmokers. And women who smoked one to 14 cigarettes a day had three times the risk of developing heart disease compared to women who did not smoke. Overall, 41% of the heart problems reported in this study were directly linked to cigarette smoking

Each day, nearly 4,800 adolescents aged 11 to 17 smoke their first cigarette, and of these, nearly ,000 will become regular smokers. Each year, about 40,700 people die from causes directly related to smoking.

Despite explicit warnings on cigarette packs and those recent terrorist-style commercials on television attacking the tobacco industry, American women still havent heard the whole truth regarding the health problems smoking can cause.

By now, most of us are aware that smokers are at risk for lung and heart disease as well as lung cancer. But those health consequences of smoking affect more men than women. Thats not to say women smokers are not at risk for lung and heart problems, but women do face problems with their reproductive health that men do not.

Over time, smoking can decrease womens levels of the hormone estrogen, putting them at increased risk for the brittle-bone disease osteoporosis. Smoking also has been linked to infertility, early menopause, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, and cervical cancer.

You would probably be amazed if you really could count how each day you are reclaiming your life. Knowing the days, hours, minutes, and money saved reminds us of how long weve been free of this demon nicotine, and it can also remind us of how long our miraculous body has been recovering and reclaiming our health.

As a recent graduate I hated dress codes. Each student has a right to dress as they please. The way people dress expresses their personality. I understand that certain things just arent suppose to be worn on the school grounds, but there are certain limits that the school boards have exceeded.

According to the school dress code policy website, the educationsa board says that they understand that each student as consitutional rights, but its their job to maintain the healh, welfare, and safety of the students who attend those schools. A positive learning environment must be maintained. An example of an acceptable dress code would be Pittsburgh school dress code policy. It states, No student shall wear any apparel or jewelry that by words, signs, pictures, of any combination there of appearing on said clothing or jewelry advocates or promotes sexual activity or violence, or the use of alcohol or durgs or demeans or degrades another because of race, sex, relogious persuasion, national origin, handicap or disability. This prohibition shall be in effect during regular school hours and at any school-sponsored event whether on or off school premises. This policy is understandable. No student should wear things that may disrepect others or what they believe in.

During my last year in high shcool, the principal would hold after school meetings with parents and students to discuss uniforms. Since this caused confusion my senior class did a survey throughout the community to see how parents felt. The school board felt that uniforms woudl give students a sense pf unity, belonging, and pride in their school. They also felt as if competition between students to wear fasionable clothing and the pressure on parents to purchase them would dicease.

When it comes to speaking of great personalities everyone has his own opinion of whom they consider to be the best. But personally the person I admire the most is non other than the legendary left arm fast bowler of cricketing world Wasim Akram.

Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1

Wisden overview

A dream cricketer. At his best Wasim Akram plays like most of us would wish to. He has complete mastery over swing and seam, and sometimes moves the ball both ways in one delivery. All this comes at high speed from a quick, ball-concealing action, and is backed up by the threat of a dangerous bouncer or deceptive slower delivery. Wasim is rated by many as the best left-arm fast bowler of all time and his career record certainly bears that out - along with the high regard of his contemporaries. He hits like a kicking horse, but batsmanship is one skill in which Wasim has underachieved, despite a monumental 57 against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura in 16-7. He was the natural successor to Imran Khan as Pakistan’s leader and captain, but the match-fixing controversies of the 10s harmed him, blunting his edge and dimming his lustre. Though he reached the 500-wicket landmark in ODIs in the World Cup, he was among the eight players dumped after Pakistans miserable performance.

Wasim Akram was showered with praise by former colleagues following his decision to end his 1-year international career, but Pakistans selectors also came in for criticism over their handling of him.

Former captain Imran Khan, who mentored Wasim as an 18-year-old, hailed him as one of last centurys greatest fast bowlers. I reckon Wasim and West Indian Michael Holding are two of the best and most natural fast bowlers of the century, Imran told AFP.

Taking Wasim under his wing in 184, Imran nurtured him until he became one of international crickets most productive fast bowlers. Grooming Wasim was the easiest thing because he was naturally gifted. All I ingrained in him was the ability to take wickets, said Imran, adding that the retirement decision was the right thing.

But Imran accused the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of ending Wasims career in an undignified manner. I do think the PCB should not have dumped him in such an unceremonious manner.

Another former captain, Zaheer Abbas, described Wasim as the pride of Pakistani cricket. He continued Losing a player like Wasim is the most depressing thing. It will be hard to replace him.

But Aamer Sohail, Pakistans chief selector denied Wasims decision was prompted by his expulsion. We did not close the doors on any senior player. Wasim could have staged a comeback, he said. Wasim was a great servant of Pakistani cricket and I pay him the richest of tributes.

Wasim Akram has responded positively to an offer from the Pakistan Cricket Board for a farewell appearance in a one-day international against South Africa later this year. Wasim announced his retirement from international cricket last month.

[Wasim] had given nothing to us in writing and we want to give him a grand sendoff from international cricket, explained Lt-Gen. Tauqir Zia, the chairman of the PCB. Zia explained that the plan is for Wasim to be included in either the match at Lahore or Karachi It would be great to bid him farewell in front of his home crowd.

Its a nice gesture on the part of PCB, said Wasim, who turned 7 on Tuesday. It would be nice to end my career where I started. I wanted to retire by giving the World Cup to my countrymen, but we fared poorly and my dreams were shattered.

I am sure it would be just a one-off match, because I dont want to block a youngsters career, added Wasim, one of eight senior players omitted from Pakistans squad after their first-round exit from the World Cup in March. But it was clear that his ambitions have not yet been entirely fulfilled.

I have heard there are efforts to stage two one-day games between Pakistan and India in September this year. It would be a dream come true if I get one chance against India in Pakistan, he added in an apparent volte face. I cant forget our defeat against India in the World Cup so if I get another chance I will definitely end that with a win.

But the PCB still have their eye on Wasims expertise. We want him to train Pakistani youngsters, said Zia. It would not be in our interest that he coach and train in England.

Down Syndrome, Prenatal Genetic Testing and Tough Decisions

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Down Syndrome, Prenatal Genetic Testing and Tough Decisions even at the eleventh hour. Down Syndrome, Prenatal Genetic Testing and Tough Decisions

Choosing whether or not to keep an unborn fetus, after genetic testing shows the child has Down syndrome, is a difficult decision for most women. Genetic testing is a sophisticated diagnostic test used today to determine the health of a fetus. While they are most often prescribed for mothers-to-be over the age of 5, who run the highest risk of having children with birth defects, younger women frequently request them simply to set their minds at ease. When problems are found women are faced with agonizing choices Terminate the pregnancy or face the risks of bringing a seriously impaired child into the world.

“Each day, genetic tests allow women to learn that the children they carry will be born free of disorders from Down syndrome. But they also mean that, each day, a growing number of parents face the agonizing responsibility of deciding whether their children will be too disabled, too retarded or too chronically ill to be born at all. And with new genes discovered every month, there now are prenatal tests for at least 00 inherited conditions, perhaps 10 times as many as when testing began, opportunities for both relief and agony only grow. The pace of discovery is continually escalating, says Aubrey Milunsky, a prenatal testing pioneer who directs the Center for Human Genetics at Boston University School of Medicine. It is now possible to detect a much larger number of genetic defects in a fetus earlier in a pregnancy than has ever been possible before. The progress has raised a painful question even among people not directly involved Does prenatal testing and abortion of affected fetuses send the message that the lives of people with mental and physical disabilities are not worth living?” (How much 1)

“Individuals with Down syndrome have a short, stocky build, with a short neck and a smaller than average skull, usually flat in back. Their distinctive facial features are the upward-slanting, almond-shaped eyes on which an early name used for the conditionmongolismwas based. Other facial characteristics include a small nose with a flat bridge; a fold of skin (the epicanthal fold) at the inner corner of the eye; a large, protruding tongue (which makes normal speech difficult); and light spots at the edge of the iris (Brushfield spots). The outer ear and chin are generally small. The hands are small, with short fingers, a curved little finger, and a line on the palm called the Simian line. Children and adults with Down syndrome tend to have sweet and docile temperaments; they are generally cheerful, cooperative, affectionate, and relaxed.” (Down Syndrome 1)

“Unlike many other genetic anomalies, such and Down syndrome, is not a terminal disorder. Children born with Down Syndrome are not vegetables, nor are their lives demonstrably not worth living. Indeed, advances in science and changes in public perception have combined to make Down Syndrome a relatively mild birth defect The average child born with Down Syndrome in America today can expect to reside at home, go to school, learn how to read, hold a job, and live to the age of 55. He will grow up cognizant of ethics and events, and will be mildly to moderately retarded, with an IQ of between 55 and 70. It is one of the triumphs of modern society that the life of the average person with Down Syndrome has become strikingly normal. Except that, unlike normal people, people with Down Syndrome have been targeted for elimination.” (Carlson 1) Science can warn parents their unborn child is genetically impaired. That knowledge presents some agonizing choices. “Prenatal testing is about reassurance Couples expect to learn their babies will be fine. But its also, often, about avoiding the births of disabled children. (Three families Three Decisions 1)

“The rapid growth of prenatal testing has had some undeniably positive effects A woman who knows she will bear a child with a handicap can plan to deliver in a hospital equipped for risky births. And many couples prefer the opportunity to prepare psychologically for the work of raising a disabled child. By far the most profound effect of prenatal testing, however, has been a staggering increase in the number of abortions.” (Carlson )

“The trend is clear More testing invariably leads to more-- many more--abortions of Down syndrome children.”Most women who have children with Down syndrome did not have the amnio, says Lori Atkins of the National Down Syndrome Society, and there is growing evidence to indicate this is true. A study of data from selected states by the Centers for Disease Control found that the rate of Down Syndrome births to mothers 5 or older dropped by about a third between 18 and 10. Another study, conducted over a slightly longer period, pegged the decline at 46 percent.” (Carlson )

“So far these choices remain the province of the parents and their medical experts. Ethicists and antiabortion activists have not yet publicly grappled with this issue. But since these tests first became available in the late 160s and early 170s, the field of genetic counseling has mushroomed. Experts predict that the number of such tests given each year will continue to increase as researchers learn how to detect more diseases in utero. As the tests become more common, so will tense conversations as doctors counsel patients about genetic probability. Every time tests turn up a problem says Joe Leigh Simpson, MD., a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and it’s an intensely personal decision. What might be too much for one mom to handle isn’t for another.” (Barrett 1)

For Tessie Sawyer this was her third pregnancy at age 5. Her doctor suggested that she have an alpha fetoprotein test during her 16 week. Never did she consider that anything could be wrong with the baby. After about a week the doctor concluded that the protein levels were low, which meant the possibility of Down syndrome. The doctor then suggested that she have an amniocentesis, which will confirm or rule out Down syndrome. Tessie and her husband decided not to undergo the testing because of risks of either premature labor or miscarriage for 5 months peace of mind. During the seventh month the doctor did an extensive sonogram. He measured the femur of the baby because the limbs are an area where Down syndrome shows up. Measurements were normal. There was still a seed of doubt that there was something wrong with the fetus. With the possibility of complications the doctor suggested a cesarean birth because he did not want any surprises. The doctor could tell immediately that the baby was fine. She was happy, and convinced that her decision was the right one. (Barrett 1)

For Vicky Eckel, age 0, it was her first pregnancy, and she was very excited. So when she took the alpha fetoprotein test and the levels came back elevated [a sign of possible abnormalities in the nervous system], it didnt bother her because she knew nothing could be wrong. The doctor suggested that she have another AFP test done because sometimes a high level just means that you are further along [in the pregnancy]. So she took the second test. Her levels were still high, but she didnt let it get her down. The doctor recommended she have a detailed ultrasound and an amniocentesis. When she went back to the clinic to discuss her test results, the doctor did a follow-up sonogram, and during the ultrasound he began to tell her that there was something wrong. Then they explained everything. They told her that the child had an obvious opening in her back, a defect known as spina bifida, and they suggested that she come back for counseling in a few days. She knew almost from the moment of finding out that she and her husband could not survive if they kept this pregnancy. She knew she was going to terminate the pregnancy, but of course, with the baby kicking and all, she was up and down. One minute she was thinking, how can I do it? the next minute she was thinking, This is the only thing I can do. As soon as the baby was born there would be major surgery. She just couldnt see a baby going through that. They told her that even with the surgery the child would probably be paralyzed from the waist down. She would be in a wheelchair. She would have problems with bladder control. There was a possibility of brain damage or Down syndrome. By the time she got home she knew exactly what she was going to do, and that was to terminate the pregnancy as quickly as possible. The decision wasnt hard. She did not have any regrets in doing what she did, and if she had to shed do it again. (Barrett )

Prenatal diagnosis gives women time to prepare. For some, the decision was to keep the baby. That God does not give us anything they can not handle. Despite the turmoil and rough times, the joy that this special child brings to them far out ways the pain and worry. For others, the choice to abort the baby is the right decision. The idea of bringing a seriously impaired child into the world is an agonizing responsibility. Yet some say if faced with this decision again, the out come might not be the same. Whatever the diagnosis, the choices are often an emotional one.

OPPOSING THE DEATH PENALTY

Do you know that 8 of the 50 states in the United States uphold the death penalty? This system has been a topic of debate for many years. Whether or not it is fitting and adequate punishment, whether or not it carries out as a deterrent to crime, and whether or not it is morally wrong, people who either support or oppose the death penalty are still arguing each other. In our attempt to create a safe and secure environment, life imprisonment must be much more favorable in laws compared to the death penalty. It is true that capital punishment can bring about a more protected feeling because there is no way the criminal can escape, but executing a law breaker even who is guilty of committing a murder is not humane. Maybe some people consider execution as more humane because it is quick and instant, but still, we have no right to take one’s life for punishing and disciplining. That is not our duty; that is God’s role. None of us should have the power to decide another’s destiny. The death penalty is also irreparable. Even if we see it through an economical motive, the belief that the death penalty costs less than life imprisonment is a myth.

Saving money is another excuse provided by those who support the death penalty, but there has been a lot of research to prove that this belief is a mistake. Studies done by the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (NCADP) show that the cost of a single capital case, from arrest to execution, is three to ten times more expensive than a non death penalty case, even one resulting in a sentence for life without possibility of being released. The Sacramento Bee also estimated that between 177 and 1, California spent $1 billion on death row cases, only to execute two people during that time period. The state can use that money for education, health programs, and many other public facilities. Assuredly, the money spent on the death penalty case can easily cover the cost of life imprisonment. For this reason, we can clearly see that the system of life imprisonment is economically more beneficial.

The purpose of the law is to provide safety and security. But the death penalty takes revenge and punishes. Law-breaking consequences are made to prevent crimes occur more, not to punish the person who is responsible the crime. To take revenge means we just do the same bad thing as the criminal. To kill someone with knowledge of what we are doing is surely a murder. The object of taking revenge is to satisfy ourselves, to see someone suffer and to feel pain just as what he did to us or to our relatives. That is just the same awful and cruel thing. It is just as tragic for the innocent to lose his life as for the states that pretend to have a power and right to take the life of the criminal convicted of a capital crime. Two wrongs do not make a right. It is nonsense to say that two people dead is better than one. The death penalty is also not proved to deter crime, which is the main purpose of law. According to the December 5, 17, Chicago Tribune, “A new national poll of police chiefs and sheriffs was conducted, and the death penalty was ranked as the least cost effective way of reducing crime.” In 174, states with the death penalty had an average murder rate of . per 100,000 populations, whereas states without it had an average rate of 5.8. And none of the states with the six lowest murder rates had death penalty laws. This result shows a lack of correlation between the threat of the death penalty and the occurrence of violent crimes. We can not pretend we can make people stop killing by demonstrating a vengeful punishment. Murderers are not rational people who always consider the consequences of their actions.

The death penalty is also irreversible. Capital punishment is a permanent solution; however, what happens if an innocent person is convicted or sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit? People make mistakes, justice can be miscarried. Research shows that in the last hundred years, there have been more than 75 documented capital punishment cases of wrongful convictions. Undoubtedly, many other cases of mistaken convictions and executions remain undocumented. An example of a wrongful conviction case is the execution of Freddie Pitts and Wilbert Lee who were sentenced to the electric chair in Florida in 16, and they were later proven innocent in 175 which was of course too late to cancel the punishment. Pitts and Lee have been executed for a crime that they did not commit. The death penalty is a permanent solution, which should not be upheld in law. Innocent people do not have to be killed just because of a wrongly conviction. A prisoner discovered to be blameless can be freed, but neither release nor compensation is possible in an execution.

With all those facts, surely we can see that the death penalty is not a solution. Beyond its horror, it has neither protected the innocent nor deterred the criminal. Capital punishment has cheapened human life and dignity. There is no doubt that people can do more when they are alive, not when they are dead. Criminals can be put in jail and instructed to work. Money is of course no value in jail. There is no reason for the criminals to receive any compensation for their work. But by working, the criminals can actually “pay back” society. One of the most well known examples of the criminal contributing to the betterment of society is the case of Leopold and Loeb who were 1 years old when they committed the crime of kidnapping and murdering a 14 year old boy. They murdered this boy only to experience an “entertaining and intellectually challenging game”; this case was later famous as “the crime of the twentieth century”. Leopold and Loeb were sentenced to life imprisonment. While in jail, their accomplishments included working at hospitals, teaching illiterates to read, creating a school for prisoners, making significant developments in the World War II Malaria Project, and writing a grammar book. So now, with all the researcher’s results, the states should realize that the capital punishment does not benefit the society. The death penalty is not a final solution; there is another way that is better and even more beneficial. We do not have to kill people to demonstrate that killing is wrong.

The Miller’s are a perfectly ordinary couple. They live in an ordinary apartment, in an ordinary town, keep ordinary jobs, and complete ordinary tasks, such as house sitting for neighbors on vacation. He completes ordinary tasks like feeding the cat and watering the plants. Of course, Bill Miller’s human urge encompasses him, and he obeys his ordinary curiosity, like checking the fridge, medicine cabinet, and closets. His fascination turns awry and he eats their food, takes their cigarettes, takes their pills, and spends hours there. Raymond Carver’s stylistic choices such as simple tone, elements of setting, and minute detail imply the odd actions of the Miller’s are commonplace.

The straightforward tone used in “Neighbors” makes the plot seem unexciting and average. The vocabulary that Carver uses is one example of his tone. He makes his plot seem low-key by using short, simple words. Most of his dialogue is in commands and he often uses fragmented sentences. His use of punctuation makes the thoughts seem uneven, and makes the flow abrupt but contradicts nicely with the odd plot. His writing is so simple and to the point that even the most bizarre ideas seem like the right idea.

“Let’s go to bed,” he said.

“Now?” She laughed. “What’s gotten into you?”

“Nothing. Take your dress off.” He grabbed for her awkwardly and she said, “Good God, Bill.” He unfastened his belt. ( )

Something lacking in the story is a clear setting. This is not noticeable while reading, because the elements of setting that Carver DOES use convey an ordinary picture of life. Nothing you read needs to be questioned, it is just taken as it is. From the beginning it the actual location of the Miller’s home is left out, all the reader needs to is that the Miller’s are in the Stone’s apartment. The detail left out because we are filled with the world of the Stone’s, the most crucial part of the setting. Carver gives us just enough of the Stone’s world to be satisfied, and not notice the obvious lack of a concrete setting.

In fact, all of Carver’s writing lacks minute detail, but contains enough to illustrate a picture in the readers mind. Times in the Stone’s apartment show many things about the Stone’s but not much is revealed of the Miller’s, who seem to be the story’s protagonists. But the fascinating world across the hall keeps a reader occupied and not concerned with the lack of Miller-related material.

I have chosen to focus my autobiographical essay on work, relating it to my past experiences and the experiences to be encountered in the years ahead. I thought this topic was rather appropriate with me being at college, hoping to obtain a degree, which will gain me a place in the world of work. When we try to define work, it proves to be quite difficult. Keith Grint claims that ‘no unambiguous or objective definition of work is possible’. To confine it to paid employment restricts it far too narrowly. A good definition would be that work is a means off passing the time, it offers something to do and structures ones life. Work can be almost any activity, ranging from working in an office, doing housework or it can even be a form of leisure. The content of work may be varied, interesting, repetitive or boring. It occupies a substantial proportion of most people’s lives than any other single type of activity.

Now let me tell you of my experience with work. For the past year I have had a part-time job in a busy service station. More than anything, this job has given me the opportunity to meet new people and relate myself to society. The experience is very beneficial. It has been a way for me to become more independent, responsible and has given me good work habits. It has made me realize my self-potential and I have become a more confident person. Our company’s objective is to have a positive attitude towards work, work hard and to the best of our ability. My boss is continually stressing that if you are kept going, the day will pass quicker. This I certainly agree with.

Fredrick Taylor, an American management consultant, argued that if workers are left to do their own thing, they will do as little as possible, and any work that they do, will be done in the least efficient way. Taylor’s solution was for management, dividing work into simple tasks that could be timed and organized. It was a system to maximize industrial output and improve efficiency. He assumed that people were motivated by economic reward. I agree with him to a certain extent, but to me job satisfaction is more important than the money I’m making. Scientific management recognized that the worker in industrial societies fitted into a system of work, which they had little control, therefore was not very satisfying or rewarding.

Work is very much affected by capitalism. Capitalism means that much of the productive system is privately owned. Most people become employees. This is in contrast to non-industrial societies, where three- quarters or more of the population are either employers, self employed, or family workers. Carl Marx stressed that capitalism turned the world against the workers, leaving them with little or no personal fulfillment or self- development. Their jobs became uninteresting and unfulfilling. It was a symptom of job dissatisfaction. Thus Marx argued that the nature of work in capitalist societies, the division of labour and imprisonment of workers to narrowly defined aspects of production, left the workers feeling alienated and exploited. Durkheim however differed in opinion. He believed that the division of labour could increase the mutual dependence of people in society and therefore strengthening social solidarity. Although he welcomed individual freedom, he saw it was a threat to social unity. It tends to make workers loose their sense of duty and responsibility towards others, factors that Durkheim saw as essential for social solidarity.

I believe that in a company the workers are the most important assets. They should be respected and their opinion’s valued. The energies of the employee should be focused on as being the main goal of contributing to company’s achievement and success. From my experience I have realized how vital it is to be happy in your job. It is important that we get along with the other members of staff, and treat everyone equally. I also believe that the workers present to the customer not only themselves but also the ethos of the business. As I am quite a confident person, I feel that I have the ability to communicate and present myself well at work. We live in a highly competitive and ever changing world and must therefore constantly adapt, in order to survive. In the workplace we must always be open to new ideas and be prepared to be flexible in the face of changing needs.

Once I finish my degree, in three years time, I hope to be successful, have a rewarding job, enabling me to have a high standard of living. This I think is the wish for almost everyone. In society today, because of the advancement of technology, people have improved lifestyles. However, because people are better educated, than in the past, competition for jobs has caused major stresses and strains on many people lives. People are continually being faced with unemployment.

Over the past fifteen years or so, unemployment rates have shot up in many countries. In Britain, unemployment stands at over three million, about 1 per cent of the labour force. We can take Rover long-bridge plant, in England as a prime example. If the plant is to close it will mean that over 00 people will be left unemployed. These people will find great difficulty trying to get another job, as they have not got the skills for the new types of jobs, such as computer and managerial jobs. This will have a major affect on every aspect of their lives.

Many studies of work have paid particularly attention to the technological advancements and impact of computers on patterns of work. Blauner describes technology as simply ’the most important single factor’. It is an independent development and has been a means of creating a better society. It has made more things possible, increasing output, leaving countries more economically well off. Technology facilitated greater levels of income for less effort. However, it has been noticed that new technology has been a threat to the workforce in numerous occupations. The major decline has been found in industrial occupations. Even professional jobs and jobs in banking and insurance are being badly hit by the new information Technology. The routine aspects of these jobs are now being automated. Therefore, although technology is an economic advantage, it has also proved to give rise to unemployment.

It may be the case that technological changes could have a major affect on my career. I could face redundancy or rejection because other people are better qualified. This is a fear that I have always had, as I find it very difficult to except not getting what I want out of life. In society today, jobs are very insecure, there is little or no worker protection, and contracts are short. This is mainly because companies are attracted to new people with fresh ideas.

Within society, major divisions are occurring. One of the major divides, related to the type of jobs people have, is class. Classes depend on economic differences between groupings of people. Some social groups are excluded from access to the most highly valued goods. People speak of a ‘hierarchy’ of social class. They often assume that money is a sign of people’s character.

The upper class in British society consists of a relatively small number of individuals and families who own considerable amounts of property and have enormous amounts of wealth. These people live lives of leisure; go on foreign holidays about four times a year and drive around in big fancy cars. They are usually employers or top executives, holding very powerful and respectable positions in society. The middle class people are those in highly rewarding jobs, the white-collar workers and professionals. People who are self-employed owners of small businesses, proprietors of small shops and small farmers are also considered to be in this grouping. The lower class of society are those in semi- skilled, manual jobs. They are not very economically well off and are often referred to as ‘the working class’. There is also a stigma attached to which profession you are in. Those in jobs at the top of the ‘ladder’ are often looked at with more respect, compared to those in low paid jobs. This is one type of job inequality that exists in our society.

Andre Gorz can see a future where everyone can spend a much smaller proportion of their lifetime in paid work and therefore can have more time for leisure and enjoyment. More and more people are going into part time jobs. They finding it rewarding precisely in the fact that they are able to balance paid work with other activities and enjoy a more varied lifestyle. At present this is what I am being able to do. However, in years to come I will have more responsibilities, bills to pay, a house to run and hopefully a family to take care off. So unless I marry a millionaire I will have to be in full-time employment, to take care of all my needs.

Work has now become one type of discrimination in society. However, it is extremely important that everyone is involved in some type of work. Whether it be paid or un-paid employment, without it there would be no human society. Work helps us understand ourselves and keeps us ‘ticking over’. If we had no work to do we would become extremely boring and depressing people. The world would be such an uninteresting place to live in. Work lets us develop, heightening such skills as communication, flexibility and cooperation. An understanding of the sociology of work can make a vital contribution to certain decisions, which face us all.

The purpose of this paper is to analysis the performance of flutes by David Gerry and Cheryl Gobbetti-Hoffman. Specifically, by examining what¡¦s my feeling of the music and performance. In the lunch time concert, there are four songs performed, including To Invoke the Clouds, ruing the edge, Litany for the whale and Piece in the shape of a Square. Flute is in the aerophone family of which the sound is created from air vibrations, and it is considered by most ethnomusicologists to be the first instrument about 0,000 years old. Because of this assignment, Ive been studying a lot about the history and mythology of the flute lately, and it makes me more interested in this instrument surprisingly. In this paper, I will talk about my expectations and the actual performance in general. Why I supposed the concert in that way and what is it really to be. Furthermore, I will also examine the biographical and historical information about the composers and the music to see if we can get some ideas of the composers when they were writing these songs, from which we can more understand the variation of the element, for example, melody; tempo; timbre and texture.

For the preparation of the flutes performance, I read some articles about the history and construction of the flutes. The flute changed in construction and the material to meet the needs of the player continuously, in which the history of the flute can mainly to be divided into five periods The Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and modern. In the middle Ages, the transverse flute was not popular in Europe initially, but was widely known after introducing by Byzantine Empire. In Renaissance, the flute became much better-known all over Europe in the 14th century as Swiss mercenaries, who used it for marching and signaling, spread its use along with their new infantry techniques. In Baroque, the new flute became known in England and Germany in the early 18th century. The first solo music for flute and basso continuo was published around 1700. In Germany and Italy especially, flutists began to write studies for the flute in all 4 keys, rather than in the restricted range of tonalities or modes it had used before. In classical, a new and more brilliant style of flute-playing appeared after about 1750 as the concerto and the symphony became the most popular musical forms. Instrument makers in London first added keys to the baroque flute and increased its bore taper, both with the aim of strengthening the instruments low register. In modern, the modern flute descends from inventions made in 18 and 1847. And I believe the development of flute will going on, the new key-systems will be invented; new materials will be used and new melody will be performed.

Good morning members of the bored, and thankyou for inviting me to this bored meeting to present my documentary proposal.

The topic of my documentary is SIDS, sudden infant death syndrome or ‘crib death’. SIDS is the sudden unexpected deaths of an infant under the age of one year. Most SIDS deaths occur when the child is between one and four months old. And the awareness of SIDS is minimal in young parents-to-be.

By presenting this documentary my team and I are aiming to promote SIDS and in turn minimise the deaths caused by SIDS.

In the late 180’s, investigator realized that it was not necessary to understand the basic underlying cause or causes of SIDS in order to do something about it. For there is mounting evidence suggesting that certain factor such as sleeping positions, cigarette smoke exposure and use of potentially hazardous bedding materials can contribute to the risk of SIDS related deaths.

And since the medical community tell parents why their babies die, they often blame themselves or other innocent people. This often leads to the parents requiring special emotional support and counselling.

For the introduction to my documentary the camera will pass though the maternity ward with mothers nursing their babies while the title appears on screen ‘SIDS’ underneath the title ‘How much do you know?’. The camera shot with then change to the narrator, a softly spoken female for a sympathetic motherly feel, walking towards the camera though a hospital nursing room. Saying, “Imagine you’re a new parent. You walk into a freshly painted nursery, which you painted yourself to check on you’re beautiful baby. And you’re child is dead.” She then continues to talk about why your baby is dead, and how hundreds of parents over Australia have to deal with this exact situation each year. But they aren’t imagining it.

An interview will then be conducted of parents who have lost children to SIDS. The first and main interviewee is Val the mother of Spenser a baby boy who died on the nd of August 187 when he only 4 and a half months old. The camera starts to zoom in on Val as she starts talking “It still hurts when I think of him. I can’t help but wonder what sports he would have enjoyed”. Spenser would have been 16 in March this year. An interview with Spenser’s Dad and older brother Zac will then be conducted and an interview with other families to show how it effects different people.

A doctor will then be interviewed to explain the known medical reasons that are known and talk about the steps that can be put in place to try and prevent SIDS.

An interview with a counsellor dealing with families who have lost babies to SIDS will be conducted. The counsellor will explain the grief the parent and siblings deal with when they lose a baby to SIDS.

And to conclude my documentary still photographs of the babies who’s parents were interviewed will be shown while Val says “when Spenser died so long ago, I said I would always remember his laugh, but I can’t remember how it sounded anymore. This realization makes me very sad because memories are all I have left of him, and I’m losing those too. But when I’m sad, it makes me feel better to know that someday I’m going to see him… in heaven”.

Soft sad music and emotional language will be used throughout the documentary to assist in the tagging of the heart strings.

SIDS is a very serious condition and is the cause of most the infant deaths of infants between the age of one and four months. And even though the amount of deaths as fallen from the late 180’s to now there are still hundreds of babies dyeing of SIDS each year in Australia alone. As the graph shows. The graph also shows that males are more prone to SIDS then females, the reasons of this is unknown. Just as the reason perfectly healthy babies die is unknown.

Between 18 and 16, there were almost 0,000 infant deaths in Australia, of which about 5,500 were due to SIDS. For the amount of children this kills each year not enough people are aware of the condition. And if they are aware the common ‘it won’t happen to me’ occurs. People need to know more about the condition and more about the ways to prevent it. And the way of doing this is to put it on television. This particular topic will attract a enormous amount of viewers and is low on budget. This documentary wouldn’t cost more then $600 000 to make, which is a very small amount considering the lives it might help save.

I am presenting this proposal to you for you to fund and show because it will attract a large amount of viewers, promote research into the reasons these infants die and aware the public of this condition of which hundreds of babies lose there lives each year.

$600 000 is a very small price to pay for a human life. Thankyou.

Sitting in the class room I began pondering on where was I going to meet a disabled person who wasn’t related to me and how was I going to find the courage to invade their life with a bunch of personal questions. Their was a lady I heard my mother mentioning a couple of times I asked her to put us in contact. My mother gave me her phone number and that is how it all began. I knew with this assignment there was a lot for me to learn but I really was not prepared for all the valuable insights this woman shared with me. I made the first phone call and a soft-spoken women answered the phone after a brief introduction we began the interview. The lady on the other end was Ms. King a thirty -six year old African-American woman who lost her vision at the age of twenty due to complications related to her diabetes. Ms. King lives alone in one bedroom apartment. She is in the process of taking college courses over the Internet. Ms. King is also the mother of a sixteen-year-old teenager who lived with her grandmother all her life and is an active member in her church. After, our 45 minutes conversation on the phone I wondered how is it that a blind person can be so talkative humorous and really sound content with life. Within seconds I felt silly to think that way when neither is a correlation of the other. I thought there was more and prehaps she was hiding behind the phone and that she wasn’t as content with life, so we made plans to meet at her home during the week.

Through out the course of the two interviews my mind kept going back to Bill Porter from Door to Door. I kept trying to figure out what makes a person so accepting of anything that comes their way. Ms. King answered that question by stating, “I am comfortable with how the Lord daily shakes and mold my journey. At that point I thought of myself how I find discontentment in everything and here is this woman who once had the ability to see all the things I take for granted yet she is content. In fact the day of the interview I had to go to court for a traffic violation and pay an obscene amount of money. I thought about canceling the meeting with Ms. King because from my felt I have just had one of the worst days of my life. One of the things Ms. King expressed was that she had just began driving during the time she lost her sight. She admitted to at times wishing she could jump in a car to go buy her own groceries. Unfortunately, she states her driving privileges were taken from her without choice. When the interview was over hearing about all her trails and tribulation, I thought hasn’t the days of her life been worse than my days?

Before I even met Ms. King one of the questions that was lingering in my mind was how does she live without experiencing a romantic relationship in her life? Although I wasn’t sure how I was going to ask her something so personal, I really wanted to know. Luckily, Ms. King bought up the topic as we discussed her relationship with her daughter. Ms. King saw her daughter as a remarkable, and inspirational person because she accepts her as her mother. I wondered would I ever have the ability to allow myself to receive inspiration from a child. During this topic, I took it as my chance to ask, “Do you date?” She started to laugh saying, point me in the direction of a good man and I’m there.” I wondered why doesn’t she feel sorry for herself? Why isn’t she upset that she will never see the young lady that her daughter is growing into? Why isn’t she dwelling on the fact that she more than likely will not get married? She will not have any more children and mainly experience romantic love. I thought something wasn’t right here these are things most women strive for she’ll never have them and she is fine with that. It is oblivious because she found a form of peace and contentment within herself; which is actually what most women should be striving for. What good does it serves us to dwell on negative things. I shamefully thought about the countless hours I’ve spent dwelling on not having a partner in my life. I thought about how I would think of my older single girlfriends and feared being single at their age. Now I’m staring to evaluate myself and I wonder why am I so preoccupied with things I have no control over. Could it be that I can only truly accept life itself, by accepting the events in my life?

By the end of the interview I was really starting to be filled with a lot of guilt. I was starting to feel more embarrassed over all the tedious things I fuss over in life. On the other hand how could a blind person not have any discontentment for life? How could she not feel sorry for herself? When Ms. King stated that being blind has enabled her to inspire others in their lives, the level of her sensitivity amazed me. I thought what is it that allows this woman to strive and have such a positive out look on life despite the fact that life has dealt her a tough hand? It appears that acceptance of one’s circumstances is the key. Sometimes a tornado sweeps into our lives without cause or warning. While we can’t prevent it, we can live through it. Ms. King expressed that her faith, family, and friends got her to where she is and that they are her inspiration. I was still trying to understand why wouldn’t a relationship be an inspiration? I actually knew the answer it serves no purpose dwelling on the things you can’t or don’t have.

As I walked to my car from Ms. King’s house I found my self-looking at my surround’s which felt like I was seeing them for the first time. I unconsciously looked at the bird that flew over my head not annoyed that it flew extremely too close to my head. My mind kept going back to how does one live without sight? I obsessively pondered on the thought of what if I lost my vision. Would I have the remarkable strength to live a gracious dignified life or would I wallow in my sorrows. After, evaluating all my notes from the interview it became clear to me that in that tiny neat apartment live a soft spoken women with a story of compassion, love, understanding, and acceptance to tell. How could a blind person who can’t see the world we live in have better perception of it than me? As I conducted my interviews with Ms. King more and more questions raised in my head and I’m still pondering on them. I’m constantly imagining myself in her situation. I’m constantly wondering how come she is in this situation. Maybe Ms. King was right God allowed her to go blind because he knew she could handle it and clearly she has embraced her disability without any anger or guilt; and that in it self is a life lesson for all.

Death of a salesman is about the American dream and one middle-aged man’s failure of it. Willy Loman is that salesman, who wants to live the dream. He has managed to create his own reality he does not live his life in the state of being actual or true. Willy Loman has created his own illusionary world in which he has an erroneous perception of reality. He sees only what he want to see and also tries to convince everyone else around him of the truth in his illusionary world.

The theme of illusion and reality is evident throughout the entire play and eventually leads to Willy’s downfall. He believes that being well liked and personally attractive will put you ahead in the business world. Although Willy has neither of these qualities, he instills this belief into his two sons Biff and Happy. Willy spends his life in an illusion, constantly believing that he is a great man who is popular and successful. That delusion is prominent when Willy took his dreams too far and told his wife Linda that he would walk into his boss’s office and ask for the office job. Willy knew what the answer was going to be but his disconnection with reality made him asks for too much. Willy wants to become successful easily like his brother Ben did. He is a dreamer who is full of pride unable to accept the fact that his dreams of being a successful salesman will never come true.

Willy’s dreams have a negative impact on Biff and Happy throughout their lives.

Biff becomes the product of his fathers’ dreams and admiration. He values being well liked and sees little point in being honest. In fact he is far from reality he thinks he is well liked when in reality he is not. Biff eventually realizes that his father is a dreamer he has followed his father’s values all his life and now finds them fake. He learns that he doesn’t have any dreams of his own and that his whole life was one ridiculous lie.

Happy’s life has been greatly influenced by Willy’s dreams even more so than Biffs. He works as an assistant to an assistant but he represents himself as someone who is much more important than what he is. Just as Willy believes he is not a dime a dozen and that the name Loman will be respected and well liked by many people. He dreams they will become wealthy and that he will be a successful businessman. Willy wanted Biff and Happy to become what he had not become. He always told them to do stuff the way he would do it if he had the opportunity not realizing that his way didn’t work.

Willy Loman is a man with many dreams. Most of his dreams would cause more damage to his life than success. He became unable to see how his family had become delusional because he became so obsessed with living the dream. Willy did not have the talent to be a successful salesman; he struggled to become something he was not. Willy often lapses into a flashback and appears to be reliving conversations and events that occurred years ago. This is itself is Willy’s inability to see reality. He is constantly lapsing in and out of reality. Ultimately, Willy’s inability to move away from the illusionary world he created became the cause of his down fall. Willy tragically ends his life by committing suicide leaving his family with sadness and sorrow.

The Diary of Anne Frank

Journeying back to the early nineteenth century, when Nazi forces occupied

Germany during World War II, the lives of those living in this territory was spent in

constant fear and anxiety. The Diary of Anne Frank leads readers through the harsh

times of a family trying to escape imprisonment in concentration camps by Nazi soldiers,

where death was almost certain. Born on June 1, 1, Anne Frank was a

German-Jewish teenager who was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust. She and

her family, along with four others, spent 5 months during World War II in an annex of

rooms above her fathers office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During the two years in

when the worst side of human nature predominates, when every one has come to doubt

truth, justice and God (pg.7). Anne kept a diary that was given to her by her father,

Otto Frank, on her birthday. Between June 14 and August 144, from Annes

thirteenth birthday until shortly after her fifteenth birthday, Anne recorded her feelings,

(pg. 7). The diary is an accurate record of the way Anne grows up and matures, in the

unfortunate situation she found herself.

Given the circumstances in which the novel is written Anne gave a very vivid

description of her surroundings and the feelings she encountered throughout her ordeal.

The novel displays the grief and frustration that is experienced throughout the time spent

in hiding. The emotions of the situation are captured in the text and gives validity to the

pain and frustration encountered. Despite the amusing and enlightening side of the diary,

that documents the process of her adolescence, it also provides a vividly terrifying

description of what it was like to be Jewish hiding during the time the Nazis sought to

kill all the Jews in Europe. After two years of living in the secret annex, behind a

office and warehouse below could not hear them the family was captured. The betrayal

of Anne and her family to the Nazis and their placement under arrest l

“If we are to have free will, that free will should include not only how we live our lives, but how long we live them” (Taylor 00, 0). Euthanasia, the specific term for assisted suicide, has been a century old controversy (Clarfield 00, 8). Its leader in the controversy is Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who has assisted in over 0 deaths since 10. Dr. Kevorkian claims that the medical, religious, journalistic and legal communities won’t stop him. Psychologist Joseph Richman says that, “All suicides, including the “rational,” can be an avoidance of or substitute for dealing with basic life-and-death issues.” So which is right, helping dying people to achieve their last wish, or waiting for God to do his part while the ill sit there and die slowly and painfully? Euthanasia should be legalized in the United States.

Hearing the negatives about euthanasia, the U.S. citizens need to also hear the good points of the topic. The question of who has the right to give or take life has played an important part in the history of technology, with designer babies and altering DNA. But it also contributes to the challenging question of who should be able to take another’s life as in physician’s aide, or euthanasia (Clarfield 00, 8). In 17, the Dutch Council of Health did their own study and decided that euthanasia should be legal. They stated that doctors needed to follow rules and regulations to assist with death (Clarfield 00, 8). Rob Jonquiere states that, “These reactions are often very hypocritical. Doctors all over the world perform euthanasia, but they don’t report it.” (Kolfschooten 00, 15) So even if euthanasia is not legalized, doctors may continue to perform the procedure. So why not legalize euthanasia anyway! “If your life is yours, then it is no one else’s business if you choose to discontinue having experiences” (Flynn 00, 5).

Then the moral issue comes in. Do individuals lives belong to God? Religious leaders will argue that God had control over everyone’s life until death, and physicians shouldn’t take that into their own hands. Although the conflict of euthanasia seems new, the actual procedure has been around since World War I (Clarfield 00, 8). It became a strong issue in the 10’s and 0’s, growing again in the 60’s and 70’s (Clarfield 00, 8). New laws are still occurring, the last one updated by Dutch euthanasia describes new regulations on April first 00 (Kolfschooten 00, 15). Many supporters of euthanasia also advocated sterilization laws (Payne 00, 57). But are the supporters agreeing with euthanasia because of their feelings towards the ill? Seventy to eighty percent of people polled that they felt sympathetic towards the terminally ill (Payne 00, 57). Even if this happens to be true, euthanasia still was morally acceptable in their views. Just like divorce, marrying outside of a persons’ racial class, and issues dealing with social classes, euthanasia shall overcome obstacles of moral, ethical, and political views with time. People just need to realize that keeping someone alive against their will, happens to be more morally wrong than giving them what they want and rightfully deserve.

Although euthanasia is illegal in the United States and its considered a taboo by most; some examples are shown in the following lines that would like to see physician-aided death prevail (Flynn 00, 4). Freddie, who after being diagnosed with cancer refused chemotherapy as a treatment for the illness. He went in for surgery and had his bladder removed. A few days later the doctors told him that the surgery was unsuccessful, and the cancer had spread to other organs. Freddie’s first week in the hospital was unbearable, waking up to day after day of pain because of laws against assisted suicide. His had spent the last three weeks in the hospital, the last one of which he spent unconscious, hooked up to machines. With a needle in each arm one to keep him alive, and the other to keep him asleep safe from the pain (Taylor 00, -0).

Sidney Cohen was diagnosed with cancer in November and was told that he would die within three months. By January 1st, Sidney was in pain, and bed-bounded praying for euthanasia. He was allowed only to drink water for six weeks, and became desperate, isolated, and frightened (Arthur 00, 1). Sidney had no reason to live his life, because in his position his life couldn’t be acceptable. People should be able to decide if their life amounts to a “life not worthy to be lived,” as Dr. Leo Alexander said that the euthanasia debate started with this question. Alexander said that there would be a rising time of death with dignity movement, or assisted suicide, which Oregon has now legalized (Washington 00, 1). The law legalizing euthanasia became a landmark law for the Oregon people when they received adequate pain relief (Washington 11, 1).

If the option of euthanasia is not available to some, the ill may take their own life as Carol Ezzell did. She did not qualify for physician aide in Holland. So she took her own life in a needlessly vile way, and her loved ones had no chance to say their last goodbyes. Because of Carol’s many years of anguished sickness and the doctors only promising worse to come, she did not see any other solution to her problem (Flynn 00, 5). That brings us back to the controversy of should euthanasia be legalized? Yeah, there happen to be ways to live longer for those that are not quite on their deathbed, but it is the patient’s decision if they don’t want to live longer. Is it not?

Having so many ways to misuse euthanasia, the United States has not passed a bill to legalize. Most doctors today in the United States that have patients in a comatose state do what their family feels happens to be right or with his or her own discretion. And if that is keeping them asleep until their last minutes of life, most doctors consider what they call terminal sedation, legal in the United States (Kolfschooten 00, 15). Physicians the world over administer pain-killing drugs to terminally ill patients that have the effect of killing them. The difference is that we do it openly, says Henk Leenen, lawyer of the medical ethics department (Wright 00, 1061). Doctors can sneak around the euthanasia debate this way. They call it the administration of a sedative medication to ease pain and agony. Doctors in the Netherlands use terminal sedation to get around having to get a second opinion. Although this technique will help the patient out tremendously it is proved that the sleep inducing drugs ends lives early (Kolfschooten 00, 15).

Using euthanasia properly in the United States, there needs to be a system of rule that is followed religiously. The Netherlands adopted the first laws that allowed euthanasia to be legal. The Dutch euthanasia regulations were set into law on April first of 00 and Henk Leenen says that all it needs to do to stay legal is follow the guidelines that the Dutch Medical Society introduced, while Europe allows the issue (Wright 00, 1061). The rules and regulations have to be followed in order to qualify for the procedure in the Netherlands; the rules include these four regulations (1) that the patient would have to be 1 years of age or older () to be of sound mind () to be suffering from severe physical pain (4) and to have an incurable ailment (Clarfield 00, 8). Although the ESA (Euthanasia Society of America) proposed a bill in the United States that would make the patient have to petition the courts and other doctors would have to examine the patient for the treatment before euthanasia to be performed, however the bill did not pass (Clarfield 00, 8). The United States should come up with rules like the Netherlands did, or just use regulations that they came up with. US doctors or doctors in general are not hanging over the bedside of these ill people trying to save money for the hospital or for the persons’ family (Payne 00, 57).

I think that Wesley Smith stated it best when he said, “We all age. We fall ill. We grow weak. We become disabled. A day comes when our need to receive from our fellows adds to far more than our ability to give in return. When we reach that stage of life…will we still be deemed persons entitled to equal protection under the law?” I certainly hope so. When I get old I want to have the right to choose to end my life. I want my rights that were guaranteed to me in the United States Constitution about my personal freedom. I would like to be able to do what I please without the government running my life. I thought that happens to be what a capitalism government is all about. Being to do what you want, when you want to, without some official questioning your sanity.

The media and advertising are a mass communication; they are a connection that is all over the world. Media and advertisements are used to inform, entertain, and also influence people and their surroundings. Today most of the advertising is aimed at young people, promoting products such as food, drink, music, films and clothing to young consumers. Whenever one picks up a magazine, turns on a Television, goes to a movie theater or even listens to music they are persistently shown advertisements and product placements in the media. Advertisers spend millions of dollars every year trying to influence product purchases on young people, especially teenagers. The constant bombardment of what is “cool” today is overwhelming, and teenagers have become the biggest market for contemporary advertising. Josie and the Pussycats is an extreme example of product placement in a film directed toward an adolescent audience.

Josie and the Pussycats is a pop movie about the attempts of three friends, Josie, Melody, and Valerie, to get their band, The Pussycats, off the ground. It’s also about the efforts of a record producer, Fiona, and her assistant, Wyatt, to persuade the children of America into buying all sorts of useless products and starting pointless fashion trends and fads. When Wyatt discovers “The Pussycats” they become the new icon for teenage crazes. Their first CD was filled with subliminal advertising and underlying messages. However “The Pussycats” are so overwhelmed by success that they remain unaware of what is happening to them and to their music.

Throughout the entire movie large, oversized product placements are clearly evident and the movie over-exaggerates its advertisements. Different products appear carefully positioned in the most obvious places. Sidewalks and airplanes are covered with Targets red targets, stores and even the girl’s penthouse bathroom present McDonalds golden arches. Skyscrapers display Starbucks coffee and the carpets read Revlon. The entire movie is adorned in ads. Every screen shot shows at least one product placement. For example, the Times Square shot holds many product placements such as Revlon, Target, Motorola, Ray Ban, Steve Madden and Starbucks. However the frightening thing is how slight an exaggeration this actually is. Even though Josie and the Pussycats represent an extreme example of product placement, advertisements are everywhere.

The role of these specific product placements in the movie only add to the criticism toward advertisements in general. I believe that the movies primary intentions were to critique today’s advertising as a whole. The movie shows how subliminal messages alter teenager’s minds and cause them to create the newest fads. The placement of these ads in the movie show how adolescents respond to product placements and the effectiveness of them. The movie’s main idea is criticizing the music industry, the youth of today, popular culture and how the media influences all this. It gives an exaggerated yet similar glimpse of how materialistic and over marketed our society is and how easily swayed we are advertisements.
