Carl Rogers presents two concepts that we battle with every day. Self-actualization and self-concept. Self-actualization, according to Rogers, is the innate tendency toward growth that motives all people to seek the full realization of their own potential. To my surprise, the teacher gave me back the paper, but with a conversation that would insult most. She called my paper dry and boring. It had no personality and lacked humor and interest. She didn’t think that it reflected “the real me”. She gave me an extension on my paper in order to write another one. We worked together until I wrote a paper which expressed my personality. When I thought I had succeeded, I had actually failed. That failure lead me to my true success. In this situation I can agree with William Zinsser when he says, “don’t be afraid to fail! Failure isn’t fatal.” (The Right to Fail; 451). We should seriously try to aply these concepts to our lives.


Zinsser also implies us not to purposely fail, but to take advantage of the failures that you are faced with in life and turn them into the successes in life that you can learn from. I once was faced with this situation. In my senior year in high school, I had to take gym. I conned the teacher into letting me pass with simply handing in essays and showing up to class. By fourth marking period my average in that class was high enough were I didn’t have to even go to class or take the final. I received a total zero in gym, but my average was still a “D”. To me gym was a waste of my time in high school so I didn’t really find it as a failure. Giving it a moral view, though, I purposely failed and didn’t reach my potential. I have made myself a statistic in high school of mediocre kids doing just enough to get by with a passing grade. Generally kids hustle their way through high school. Their diplomas become meaningless when they ern it through begging for the grade rather than working for it. Students are cheated by the educational system when the system releases incapable students into a world that requires more than they can handle, but should have been able to handle.


When teachers throw failure into a students face they tend to develop a healthy fear of failure. They feel cornered and threatened, therefore obligated to work for there grade rather than hustle for it. Students tend to react towards negative reinforcement in a positive way, thus making the threat of failure a positive teaching tool.
