Escape from Freedom- An Academic Review

Over the course of history, man’s desire for complete freedom has been overcome by the responsibilities and dangers involved with liberty. Freedom can represent different things to people, this can entail civil, political and ethic liberty’s. The more freedom we poses, the bigger the burden and the more we are responsible for. This causes some of us to desire less freedom in favour of support for those who will decide for us, freedom then becomes a negative situation from which we try to escape.

Erich Fromm’s book Escape from Freedom explains how freedom comes at a price. He believes “That modern man, freed from the bonds of pre-individualistic society, which simultaneously gave him security and limited him, has not gained freedom in the positive sense of the realization of his individual self, that is, the expression of his intellectual, emotional and sensuous potentialities. Freedom, though it has brought him independence and rationality, has made him isolated and, thereby, anxious and powerless.”(forward x) Fromm believes we feel lonely and isolated due to our separation from nature and each other. We are the only species of animal to feel this isolation, he thereby refers to it as the human condition.

Fromm takes a social-psychological approach by combining the theories of Freud and Marx. Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis focussed on the individual self, while Marx’s views pertained to society as a whole. Fromm breaks his structure of thinking into three groups His purpose in studying and writing about this subject is because he believes this to be the main crisis of our time. The initial version of this book was first written during the

reign of the Nazi party over Germany. Fromm’s goal was to develop a clear understanding of how such an evil organization could become so powerful. The fact that Nazi party gained control of a democratic nation shows that this could happen even in todays free world. Hitler’s rise to power was a combination of economic, political and psychological issues facing Germans at that time. The Nazi party appealed to the lack of patriotism facing the country, after the loss of the first world war.

Fromms most significant argument in this text are the three ways in which he believes we escape from freedom Authoritarianism, Destructiveness and Automation Conformity. Authoritarianism, according to Fromm, can be approached in two ways. One is to submit to the power of others, and the second is to make others submit to your power. In both cases Fromm believes you escape your individual self, and thus have lost your freedom. Fromm refers to these extreme forms of Authoritarianism as Masochistic and Sadistic. Masochism is when we avoid freedom and individuality by submitting to the powers of others to compensate for a lack of strength. The other extreme form being sadism, which Fromm believes can be broken into three different types intertwined together. The first is to create unrestricted power of dependency, the second is to not only rule over others but to cripple their liberties, and finally the third is a desire to make and see others suffer() Fromm uses the example of Authoritarianism to explain how Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party convinced so many to follow him on his mission to remove all liberties, including life, from their supposed enemies, the Jews. Both the masochistic and sadistic forms of authoritarianism solve the problem of anxiety associated with freedom, by destroying the individual self. Fromm refers to these traits as symbiosis. “Symbiosis, in the psychological sense, means the union of one individual selfwith another self (or any other power outside of the own self) in such a way as to make each lose the integrity of its own self and to make them completely dependent on each other.”(p.157) Destructiveness as a form of escape can easily be confused with sadism and masochism. Fromm argues the close relation between sadism and destructiveness by explaining their differences. “Sadism is not identical with destructiveness, although it is to a great extent blended with it. The destructive person wants to destroy the object, that is, to do away with it and to get rid of it. The sadist wants to dominate his object and therefore suffers a loss if his object disappears.”(p.158) In this text Fromm also states that sado-masochistic behaviour is often hidden under the guise of love, yet the true meaning of the act is generally due to one’s enjoyment of dependence or domination. The destructive person escapes isolation and weakness by destroying the world around them. These people feel the need to be destructive to the world in order to stop it from destroying them. This Destructivenss also refers to the desire to destroy those with power. This destruction can be channelled in several different ways, such as, hate groups, religion and patriotism. These actions can be rationalized by the mentally ill who turn to this form of “escaping freedom.”() This behaviour can lead to acts of vandalism, hatred, such as racism and crime in general. Destructiveness can also be focused inward resulting in a self-destructive mentality. The most severe example being suicide. Hatred and Destructiveness stem out of frustration from attempts to live and act creatively. The positive energy is transformed into destructive energy. Automation Conformity is the most common way in which we “escape from freedom.” Fromm states that out of a fear of alones we conform to the mass of society. By acting, doing, believing and looking the same as everyone else we gain a sense of power. Through the masses we gain the comfort of being a part of something and belonging, thus empowering ourselves. At the same time this denies us of our individuality and changes our natural selves. Thus in conforming to the model of society, there is no reason to acknowledge your freedom or responsibility. Fromm believes people to be products of the society that they grew up in. The behaviours we have come to know as normal, are learned, therefore natural to us. Fromm traces idea of society back to the middle ages, he shows how the structure has changed. As a reaction to this our individual needs and place in this world have changed. In the society of the middle ages people thought of themselves as having a pre-determined place in life, such as servents, royalty and tradesman. As we moved into modernity people began to realize and fight for the benefits of freedom. Fromms theories are also relevant in the world today. Not only do these ideas apply to the facist dictators of the Middle east, they are also extremely relevant in our so called “free” western society.

“Escape from Freedom” introduces the reader to psychoanalytic theory and how it applies to thre understanding of society, giving reasons as to why we act the way we do. This text also delves into the psychology of facism and authoritarianism, explaining how such systems are capable of gaining so much power. Fromm covers all areas of his argument in depth, he explains where we started from and where we need to be. While this text ‘Escape from Freedom, offers many insights into the history and psychology of society and the structure ivolved. Erich Fromm wrote this text with the purpose of gaining some insight as to how the Nazi party gained so much power in previously democratic society. Fromms main problem seems to be his tendency to over generalize about the world. He makes assumptions supported by nothing more than his own beliefs. Fromm attempts to draw parallels between human behaviour and society backed by nothing more than philosophy and his own assumptions. Ideas are taken as facts, assuming that psychology is the truth. The subject matter seems to personal for fromm to be fairly objective between his search for the truth and what he believes to be right. All in all, ‘Escape from Freedom’ is a very relevant worth while read. The subject matter brings up valuable theroies which might have gone unnoticed if not for the passion of Erich fromm. This text provides important insights into the inner workings of society. Whether or not these ideas are entirely factual, they must not be ignored, Instead we must embrace them and attempt to explore them further.

For this assignment, I chose to read the modern Canadian fiction book, Unless by Carol Shields. I first noticed this book was when reading BC BookWorld for assignment 1. However, I did not have much interest in this book at first, not until I was doing research on the internet. When I was trying to find a Canadian fiction book on the internet, I found out Unless by Carol Shields appeared almost everywhere. Therefore, it started to grab my attention. Then, I found out that the book, Unless, will be Carol Shields¡¦ last novel due to her illness in breast cancer and it may be her most despairing book. Therefore, I decided to read this book for my assignment. In this paper, I will briefly summarize the book and talk about my reaction to it. Also, I will discuss what seems to be distinctly Canadian about this book.

In Carol Shields¡¦ Unless, the main character, Reta Winters, is a forty-four years old writer living in a suburb of Toronto. She has a loving husband who is a successful family doctor and is faithful to her. Although they were never legally married, but they have lived happily together for twenty-six years and have three teenage daughters. Also, Reta is an author of a successful novel and a translator. It seems that Reta¡¦s life is happy and almost perfect, but under many reasons, her life is not so wonderful at all. Her oldest daughter, Norah, is a 1 years old girl who suddenly abandons her normal life and starts to beg on a street corner in Toronto. Reta and her family do not quite understand why their lovely daughter suddenly changed. It seems that Norah is searching for something, searching for goodness for her life in this world. Even though Reta wants to live normally and pretends nothing has happened, but deep inside, the whole thing is just killing her. Still, Reta is searching for the reasons which drove her Norah into such a state. During the searching, Reta notices that the women are considered as weak and powerless in this society, even in a fiction story created by male. She seems to blame the whole society since she thinks it is the reason for her daughter¡¦s sudden changes. In the end of the book, Norah ends up in a city hospital with pneumonia. After knowing the reasons for Norah¡¦s changes and after the whole family is again reunited as one, Reta starts to realize the meaning and hope for her ordinary life.

The whole story of Unless by Carol Shields mainly focuses on feminism. However, in this book, Shields only talks about the negative views of feminism. She talks about that women are treated unequally in the society nowadays, and women are powerless among men. The main character, Reta, thinks that women are considered as weak human beings not only in the real lives but also in the fiction stories created by the men. In the story, Reta writes a latter to the writer, Alexander Valkner. She writes ¡§you certainly understand that the women who fall even casually under your influence (mea culpa) are made to serve an apprenticeship in self-denigration¡¨ (Shields, C., 00, pg. 165). Those social concepts seem to make the women hopeless and have no bright direction to the future life. Therefore, women started to believe that they are actually really weak and they can only have some controls at home but not in the society. Women can only find a tiny bit of power during cleaning the house or preparing meals for the whole family. At first, it seems that this book is quite despairing, but actually, Shields is trying to tell the women to have faith in finding hopes in such an unfair and ordinary life. The unfair feminism occurs almost in everywhere, even in Canada. It may seem that Canada is much more socially developed than other countries, so the women in Canada should have more power. However, comparing to men, women still live in an unfair world without much power. In the book, you can see that Shields is trying to tell the readers how difficult for a woman to take controls in work, or in life. I, as a woman, strongly agree with Shields. Women are not treated equally in the society and the men seem to take control in everything. Life of a woman is quite uneasy and women start to forget what they really want for life. Therefore, I think it is really important for women to have hopes and to search for the meaning of their lives.

This novel, Unless, is distinctly Canadian, since many things in the story are well related to Canadian backdrops and culture. The main setting of this story is in Toronto, Canada. Reta, the main character of the story, and her family are living in a hundred year-old house in a small town called Orangetown near Toronto. The neighborhood is quite and peaceful and the people live closely to the nature. In Canada, nothing is more important than nature. Trees can be seen almost everywhere around Canada. This story seems to perfectly describe the life style and natural environment in Canada. For example, Reta¡¦s family is still living in an old house where they still use wood fire in the winter. From this, I can easily imagine myself in a wooden house with wood fire stove by my side. It just seems perfectly Canadian. I think it is because the author, Shield has lived in Canada for over 40 years, she can understand fully about the Canadian life style so she can well describe it in her story.

Also, the main character Reta, was a bi-lingual speaker. She speaks both English and French since her father is from an English speaking region and her mother is from a French speaking region. The two main languages in Canada are English and French, so it is perfectly normal to see a person who can speak both of these languages in Canada. In Canada history, the two most powerful colonies are English and French. Although those two colonies fought with each other for many years, but the mixed marriage between these two are normal in present days. Canada is a multi-cultural country. Different races of people are living in this big land. ¡§His parents were immigrants. They sacrificed their language, their cultural roots¡¨ (Shields, C., 00, pg. 85). The above quote can be used to describe the immigrants in Canada. They left their own countries and moved into a country where people speak a different language. I am an immigrant from Taiwan, so, I can understand fully how hard it is for a person to live in a country with different culture and language.

Even though the whole story is well related to Canada, however, these Canadian features will not limit its chances in the international marketplace. As I mentioned above, the story is mainly focus on the unfair feminism. This kind of social problem occurs almost everywhere in the world,

Arthur Miller

Novel writer

1 Hillside Rd

PO Box 84

Castle Hill NSW 154

Dear Arthur Miller,

I have just read your fantastic play Death of a Salesman and it has enlightened me about the American Dream and the terrifying extent that people will go to try and capture it. I believe “The American Dream”, is the idea that life in America assures certain things and that it guarantees a certain way of life. According to this ideal, the United States is the land of freedom and opportunity which guarantees; Stability and comfort in the home, Success in a good job and nuclear family and the Ability to overcome difficulties. Therefore the people, who strive for “The American Dream”, are looking for these three things and believe it is the only way to survive in a harsh world.

In your play Death of a Salesman Willy Loman a sixty year old Brooklyn salesman accepts “The American Dream” and struggles to attain it throughout the play. Biff on the other hand is the opposite of Willy and he rejects “The American Dream”.

A related text that also is critical of “The American Dream” is the movie by Sam Menandez American Beauty, in this movie Lester rejects “The American Dream” as he realises that it is unsatisfying.

Arthur in your play, Willy Loman stands accused of the worst thing that can happen to a man in 0th century American; failure. The great American myth is that the world lies open to you, and its archetypal embodiment is the salesman. If you fail, you are jobless and placeless; we know that Willy Loman failed when he says “I still feel kind of temporary about myself”, as this shows that he is unsatisfied and lacks hope in his life, also the word “temporary” suggests that he is unsettled, especially as his job as a salesman requires him to travel all the time. Willy accepts “The American Dream” as he has been indoctrinated that it is the only dream to strive for, he believes that it is the panacea to all problems and will lead to fulfilment and safety but we see that in the end Willy was naive to think that it is the answer to all his problems as he ends up committing suicide because of the all great “American Dream”. In your play Willy gets fired because he is a salesman who can’t sell, Willy views his “firing” as an indictment on his whole personality. As Charley says on page 77 “the only thing you’ve got in this world is what you can sell”. Now that Willy has no job his “American Dream”, is falling apart and he feels like his identity is crushed and his way of relating to the world is destroyed and even results in borrowing money because he can not face the reality that he has been fired. When Happy says to Biff, “Dad is never so happy as when he’s looking forward to something”, shows that Willy is happy when he is living in a dream world which is why he is so adamant to achieve “The American Dream”, because he is living in a fantasy world.

In Death of a Salesman Biff rejects “The American Dream”, unlike his father Willy and brother Happy who accept it. Biff rejects “The American Dream” as he perceives it to be false and can see through it, he also has seen that it has a detriment effect on the world as shown by the death of his father and he blames his father’s death on “The American Dream” when at his funeral he says “He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong”. Biff realises that his father was a phoney and he accepts reality and moves on with his life and tries to get Happy to face the reality that the reason his father died was because of his strong ambition to attain the false

The Resource Allocation negotiation was my first opportunity to participate in a multi-party negotiation. Managing the multi-party dynamics proved to be particularly difficult and while the outcome in pure financial terms was fairly positive for my company (Techville Enterprises), I was totally unsuccessful in building trust and goodwill with the other parties involved. The primary issue that I had difficulty with was clearly communicating with Jenny C. (Sturdyville, Inc.) and setting up a coalition. In my pre-negotiation analysis, I had come up with a justification for valuing Steve H.’s (Unityville Industries) contribution at $40,000. Unfortunately, I was unable to let her know this information prior to the negotiation which led to huge difficulties creating and maintaining a stable relationship with both players.

As the middle size player in the negotiation, my goal was to quickly establish both qualitative and quantitative rationale for why we should not just split the pie into three equal segments. Utilizing a portfolio theory approach, I attempted to appeal to Jenny and Steve’s sense of utility maximization for the group. I argued that looking at the situation from the standpoint of the Resource Allocation Fund, the largest amount of funds should go to the company which posed the least risk, Sturdyville and also that Unityville was the riskiest bet and it did not make sense to allocate an equal portion of the funds to this research. In response to this analysis, neither Steve nor Jenny acted in the manner in which I expected. Jenny agreed in some respect with the idea, however, she did not readily admit that I deserved any more of the pie than Unityville and Steve did not respond at all. While the logic seemed appropriate, I believe that I made two huge errors here. First, I should have spoken with Jenny prior to the negotiation. If I had done that, I could have made it crystal clear that I was not looking to take the largest piece of the pie. This may have helped galvanize her support for the qualitative reasoning. Second, rather than puSteveg my analysis directly, I could have created more of a discussion atmosphere by introducing “portfolio theory” concepts and acting more as a facilitator to make my arguments. This approach could have deflected some of the negative feelings Steve felt towards me and would have appeared as a less distributive tactic. It was too early in the discussion to get into such distributive matters.

The quantitative analysis indicated that a Sturdyville and Techville combination could garner $xxx, while the three companies together would only be able to get $xxx or $xxx more. I used this as the basis to discuss how much should be allocated to Unityville in a three way partnership. Once again, this did not go over well with the other parties. At the same time that they both agreed that a three way deal would clearly be the most optimal outcome, Steve felt threatened and Jenny believed that I was going for the largest piece of the pie. In both the qualitative and quantitative cases, I had succeeded in setting the groundwork; however, it was at the expense of my reputation as a team player and integrative negotiator.

In a three-way negotiation, it is difficult to place yourself in a position where it does not appear that you are taking sides. Jenny and Steve, having heard my quantitative analysis, asked me how much I felt I deserved. This was clearly a loaded question. As soon as I mouthed “$xxx”, I realized I had made a big mistake. By anchoring on a number that was specific to my interests, I set myself apart from both Steve and Jenny. I do not think setting the anchor was a mistake, however, in response to the specific question I was asked, I should have spoken about the package as a whole (including all the parties).

Jenny took the initiative to put the first full package on the table, $xxx for Sturdyville, $xxx for Techville, $xxx for Unityville. Considering all of the arguments against Unityville receiving this amount, Steve should have felt this was a generous offer. However, because of the distributive tactics I had used earlier, we failed in setting up a fairness standard to compare this deal to and Steve became very hard to convince. Jenny was focused on having three parties involved and coming up with an integrative solution, so she continued to change the parameters of the deal until Steve would accept. We ended up agreeing upon $xxx for Sturdyville, $xxx for Techville and $xxx for Unityville. At first glance, this would appear to be a fairly good deal for all parties. Unfortunately, because of the events leading up to this point, Steve felt cheated and Jenny and I did not receive an amount commensurate with our initial expectations. In the future, I will absolutely try to 1) create a coalition prior to the negotiation and ) spend more time absorbing information before puSteveg my own agenda. Each of these tactics could have helped me to leave the negotiation with much stronger relationships with the other parties.

Partner Analysis

Jenny was clearly the most positive throughout the negotiation and remained focused on achieving the most integrated solution. She indicated as much early on and built trust with both Steve and I in the process. In addition, her tone was relaxed and cooperative even through the more distributive aspects of the negotiation. Although, it appeared that we had taken sides against Steve, I believe Steve felt more resentment for me about the end outcome. The only thing I would suggest for Jenny is that after the total pie was expanded to the full $xxx, she could have turned around and acted more distributively. Given the rationales presented, I would not have had difficulty allowing her to take the largest piece of the pie.

Steve did a terrific job in using a high aspiration point, an equal three-way split, and sticking to it in the face of tough opposition. He continued to deflect arguments well and successfully appealed to Jenny and me for an integrative solution. I did however feel that he took advantage of this situation towards the end of the negotiation. If he had allowed for an initial settlement at $xxx, $xxx and $xxx, I believe that he could have moved us up later using a post-settlement settlement and would have taken on less resentment in the end.

Blue Winds Dancing

By Whitecloud

A main idea of this work concerns itself with the role of contemporary Native Americans in white society. This is evident in the text when we read, No constant peering into the maelstrom of ones mind; no worries about grades and honors; no hysterical preparing for life until that life is half over; no anxiety about ones place in the thing they call society (1).

There is further support for this when the author says, I just sit by a fire and think about myself and all other young Indians. We just dont seem to fit in anywhere certainly not among the whites and not among the older people (14). Whitecloud experiences the role of contemporary Native Americans in a white society when he transferred from his white society to a Native American society.

A dominant tone of this piece could be described as sad and lonely. This feeling is conveyed to the reader by the image of the moon and a fall wind blowing in [Whiteclouds] heart (1). Whitecloud also tells the reader, I am alone; alone but not nearly so lonely as I was back on the campus at school (14). It is not until the end, when the main character is reunited with his people, that the tone changes to happiness.

A striking passage that deserves attention as a means to an important aspect of the work is when Whitecloud deecides, if he is white or Indian. He first asks, Am I Indian or am I white? (15) He says to himself, If I am white I will not believe that story. If I am Indian, I will know that there is an old woman under the ice (15). Although he knows the legend of the old woman under the ice cannot be true, the reader understands that Whitecloud decides to be Indian when he says, I listen for a while, and I know there is an old woman under the ice (15).

As I think about this passage, I connect it to the work in several ways and make interpretive meaning. The first way is that heritage by acknowledging his Indian roots. Also, the inclusion of Native American folklore in this piece signifies the importance of story telling in their culture. This particular aspect of Native American culture obviously had a significant impact on Whitecloud.

Football. Its a few training sessions and a 0 minute game but still over the years it has become one of the worlds leading sports. Nowadays the excessive salaries that players are acquiring have overshadowed football. Football shouldnt be about money, it should be about the love of the game but still clubs are willing to pay over £50,000 a week to keep top footballers at their clubs, like david beckham, Ray Keane and Ronaldo. This is twice as much as the average man earns in a year so can footballers wages be justified? There are various arguments that can be raised for and against the justification of footballers wages.

One reason that footballers believe that their wages are justified is because they think that if they have the talent and are good enough to be picked then they deserve the money that clubs are willing to pay them. Whilst it might be tru that fooballers do have considerable skill there are many other proffesionals which also require a great deal of skill

e.g doctors

true no doubt their success comes at a price, yet they have chosen that profession, they know what they are letting themselves in for and so they should not complain. It should be argued that the invasion of privacy that they feel still does not justify the exessive wages that they are paid.

there are no easy answers to the question of wether footballers; wages are justified or not. whilst in many ways their wages are resonable conidering their talent and the pressure that they undergo in terms of the media and the game itself.

Part 1 R&D Investment for the

Knowledge-Based Economy

Scientific and technological knowledge and its wide dissemination

play a vital role in the knowledge-based economy. It is widely

agreed that research and development (R&D), along with the

availability of a highly skilled workforce, the creation of an intense

interplay between the stakeholders of national innovation systems,

and the effective use of information and communication technologies,

are the key conditions for successful innovation and the competitiveness

of advanced economies.

The capacity to create and apply knowledge has become more important

in the production of goods and services. On the one hand,

production is more research-intensive, drawing on the utilisation

of research findings; on the other hand, it is technology-intensive,

drawing on the exploitation of new technology, and on the command

of the knowledge base of advanced and tailored services and

complex production processes.

This part of the document first examines the investments that various

countries are making in R&D, and the main sectors making

those investments. Secondly, some key figures on Community

funding of research by means of the Framework Programmes are

presented. Thirdly, since in most countries the business sector plays

the most important role in terms of R&D spending, private investment

will be examined in more detail. As venture capital (VC)

investment ¨C from private as well as public sources ¨C becomes more

and more important for the creation of new firms and employment,

key data on VC investment will conclude this part.

Key findings

¡Ã¶ Since the mid-10s, the gap in R&D financing between the EU

and the US has almost doubled in volume terms. The gap is

mostly because the growth in R&D activities in the main EU

economies has been low by comparison to that in the US,

especially in France, the UK and Italy.

¡Ã¶ There are substantial differences between Europe and its

main competitors in the structure of their R&D funding. In

the EU, while governments account for a much larger share

of R&D investment than in the US and Japan, the situation is

the reverse in the case of business R&D. The absolute volume

and the growth of R&D investments being made by

European companies are substantially below the levels found

in the US.

¡Ã¶ The EU countries have converged in terms of the development of

their R&D system. On the one hand, most of the small EU

economies, and those that are catching up, have recorded the

highest growth rates for R&D investment and R&D intensity

(the amount of R&D investment per unit of GDP). On the other

hand, the major EU economies have registered either comparatively

moderate or negative rates for growth of R&D investment

and R&D intensity.

¡Ã¶ The business sector finances and executes a high share of R&D

in several EU countries. However, comparing the EU average to

the US and Japanese shares respectively, the EU¡¯s business sector

is lagging far behind.Perspectives

In order to meet the objective set at the Lisbon Summit in March

000 to make the EU the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-

based economy in the world by 010, the EU has a major

challenge ahead. While both the private and the public sectors

need to invest more in R&D, these investments should be made in

an effective way, with special focus on mechanisms to stimulate efficiency

throughout the whole R&D system. During the past few

years, growth in R&D financing has been insufficient, but more

progress has been made in the way the funds are allocated. For instance,

public funds are increasingly awarded on a competitive basis,

often through intermediary public funding organisations and

via public-private co-financing programmes.

Aiming at achieving the % objective by the year 010, much attention

is being paid to enhancing private sector efforts in research.

In particular, as Europe lags significantly behind the US in venture

capital financing, additional efforts have been made to support

venture capital financing in seed, start-up and expansion phases of

new business activities; these are expected to generate new business

sector R&D activities and R&D performers. Also, public sector

R&D should be strengthened with new resources for research

along with increases in public funding for private sector R&D.

Because of the potential systemic failures of national innovation

systems (mismatches, inefficiencies, lack of collaboration), an increase

in funding is not enough on its own. Other factors affecting

the volume of R&D and the level of R&D intensity should be taken

into account as well. These include, for example the regulatory

environment for R&D; the stock of human resources in research;

and the capacity of the innovation system to absorb any increases

in funding; and the capability of R&D financiers and

performers to co-operate and use funding in a productive way.

The role of governments is increasingly seen to be to act as a facilitator,

creating a favourable regulatory framework and environment

for the various players in the innovation system to conduct

research and to collaborate with each other. The key issue is stimulating

public¨Cprivate partnerships in both financing and in research

and development. In this regard, Community funding

through Framework Programmes has opened up new avenues for

more intensive collaboration and participation in multi-annual

pre-competitive R&D bringing together partners from various

countries and from different sectors of the economy. This trend is

enhanced by the implementation of the Sixth Framework Programme

with the introduction of new instruments, and by the

favourable development of Community funding for co-operative

R&D activities.Part Human Resources in S&T

Human resources are an important element of the knowledgebased

economy. The role of human resources in economic processes

is being re-defined ¨C from the creator of knowledge in

S&T processes to the applicant of knowledge within broader the

economy. Human resources in S&T are measured by the numbers

of people in S&T related occupations, and the level of formal

educational qualifications in the labour force.

This section analyses key indicators on human resources in S&T,

including numbers of researchers, graduates in S&T (especially

new PhDs), investment in tertiary education, international mobility

of students and researchers and women in S&T.

Key findings

¡Ã¶ In the EU Member States, the proportion of researchers in the

labour force is low compared to the US and Japan; only Finland

and Sweden are at the same high level.

¡Ã¶ The EU produces more S&T graduates than the US or Japan,

both in absolute terms and in relation to population size.

¡Ã¶ EU Member States invest less of their national resources in tertiary

education than the US, but more than Japan.

¡Ã¶ The main foreign destinations of EU students are the US and

Canada. The main regions of origin of foreign researchers in the

EU are other European countries, Asia and Oceania.

¡Ã¶ In the EU, women are less well represented than men in S&T and

the situation is even worse among researchers.

1. How does your ecosystem differ from a natural ecosystem?

My ecosystem is artificial, meaning that it is controlled and not completely natural. Natural ecosystems are completely dependent upon themselves and have a chance of failing or changing due to human interferences. An artificial ecosystem is partly reliant on an outside source. In this case, I am the outside source, as I have created and maintained the ecosystem by guaranteeing the proper amount of sunlight, the location, and the amount and different kinds of species. Also, there are differences in the behaviour of the inhabitants of the ecosystem. My organisms do not have to compete for food, or fear predators, therefore increasing their life expectancy. However, the natality rate among my organisms would be very low, as there are only a couple of species and very few numbers of them. From this, I realized that an artificial ecosystem would be suitable for one generation of species, and not a continuous cycle.

Thus, I conclude that the two main differences in an artifical ecosystem in comparison with a natural one are a) The conditions and maintenance of the entire ecosystem

- artificial Controlled and carefully assuring appropriate amounts of sunlight, temperation etc.

- natural Easy to be interfered with the doings of humans; exposed to a various amount of temperature and weather changes

b) The behaviours of the organisms living within the ecosystem so as to maintain balance

- artificial Under ideal conditions, organisms have a high life expectancy and a low natality rate

- natural Harsher environment requiring adaptability; organisms have a lower life expectancy, but a higher natality rate

. How do plants make their own food and animals get the necessary nutrients from the ecosystem?

The aquatic plants act as a ‘gateway’ to the food chain in my ecosystem. They acquire their nutrients through photosynthesis. This is one of the reasons why 10 hours of sunlight is required. Through photosynthesis, the plant is capable of surviving and acting as a food source for the fish. The snails, as the decomposers, (linking the top of the food chain to the bottom), feed of off the fish waste and the remains of dead fish (when possible). The snails decompose the waste into nitrates for the plants to absorb. Because my ecosystem is smaller than a natural ecosystem, it only has two trophic levels. The plant/algae are the producers, the fish are the first order consumers, and the snails are the decomposers.

. Why is light required?

Light is required for three reasons.

a) Plants require the light for photosynthesis.

b) Light is required for the ecosystem to maintain a proper temperature in order for the organisms to survive. Sunlight is a form of energy, and it must enter my ecosystem the same at the same time that infrared light is radiated out .When the temperature is too cold or too hot (too little light or too much light), or constantly changing from one extreme to the other, the organisms (especially the fish) cannot survive very well.

4. What do you think will happen if a fish or snail dies?

Death is normal in an ecosystem as one generation needs to be eventually replaced with another. However, in an ecosystem as small as mine, death should not be occurring too often, as the ecosystem will collapse if too many organisms die. One death may not be that bad for the ecosystem, as the dead organism will act as an extra food source for the other creatures that will begin feeding upon it. The other fish may begin eating it soon, while the snails would turn the dead fish into useful nutrients for the plant (nitrates). That dead may be the cause of over-crowding, and it would prove to be good for the rest of the creatures, as its death would give the ecosystem more stability (more room for the other fish). However, the death of a fish or snail could also mean that there is an imbalance in the ecosystem, and the chances of the other few fish and snails dying is increased.

5. If your ecosystem is healthy, explain the factors that are responsible for making your ecosystem successful.

The perfect ecosystem has oxygen-consuming bacteria (from the water), fish and snails consuming oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide at the same time as the green plants are producing oxygen and consuming carbon dioxide. This is called an ecological equilibrium.

My ecosystem is healthy mainly due to the caution I took when putting the ecosystem together. The controlled factors (the factors that I influenced) included the container for the ecosystem, the temperature and amount of sunlight in which I tried to ensure would be appropriate for the ecosystem.

Firstly, I found a container that would be the perfect size for my three fish, three snails and few strands of aquatic plants. The number of fish, snails and plants was also taken into consideration as it would have to be proportionate to the container size. The amount of space in the container should be sufficient, as a clustered artificial ecosystem is the equivalent of an over-populated natural ecosystem.

Secondly, I situated my ecosystem in a room where I knew sunlight reaches for quite a few hours. Also, I placed the bowl in the same room to try and allow sunlight to reach the bowl at the same time of day. This is to allow the fish and snails to adapt to their surroundings.

Thirdly, I made sure that the bowl was not being overheated due to the amounts of sunlight. This problem I went around by placing the bowl at a safe distance from the window, while checking on it every few hours to see if the distance is too close or too far.

Finally, the rest would be left up to the organisms to develop a food chain, find food and adapt to their surroundings.

This scene is known as the closet scene, it is a pivotal scene in Hamlet. Hamlet confronts his mother, Gertrude, over her recent decisions, whilst displaying his condition, his mothers position, and the relationship between them.

This scene begins with Polonius telling Gertrude that she should be direct with Hamlet when she confronts him, he then tells her that he is going to stand silently behind the tapestry so that he can listen to their conversation, this is ironic as it is his lack of silence that causes his death. Polonius hides and Hamlet enters. Gertrude tells Hamlet that he has offended his father, Claudius, and in response to this Hamlet tells her that she has offended his father, Old Hamlet. Gertrude gets offended by the way that Hamlet is answering back to her so she asks him if he has forgotten who he is speaking to, here we can see what type of strict relationships parents had with their children in the Elizabethan era in contrast to what they are today. Hamlet though continues to answer back to her, telling her what the situation that they are in is you are the queen your husbands brothers wife when he carries on speaking he uses such a tone that we get the idea that he doesnt want her to be his mother anymore. After this comment Gertrude rises, resentful of what Hamlet has just said, Hamlet pushes her down again telling her that she must not move away to fetch others as he goes to fetch a mirror for her, the mirror that Hamlet is talking about is the one which reveals the truth and sets standards. He wants her to look to the bottom of her soul. By the way that Hamlet has phrased this line Gertrude takes it as a threat of personal violence and calls out for help and Polonius responds to this, thinking that it was Claudius behind the tapestry Hamlet kills him.

Hamlet wants to know if it is the king that he has just killed, Gertrude is in shock and she tells Hamlet what a rash and bloody deed is this. Hamlet tells her that this deed would almost be as bad as killing a king and marrying his brother. Gertrudes response for some confirms her innocence; she doesnt seem to have a clue as to what Hamlet is talking about. Hamlet then lifts up the arras and finds out that it is Polonius that he has killed; he calls him a meddling old fool. After this their conversation continues, Hamlet tells Gertrude that he hopes that her heart hasnt become so hardened that its impenetrable, he believes that her vices, that to her have become so habitual, are to blame. Gertrude questions Hamlets reasons for talking to her in such a way, he tells her his reasons are that she has committed an act that heaven would be ashamed of. Hamlet personifies the act be telling her that is an act that blurs the grace of modesty. He tells her that the skies are red with shame, and the huge earth itself, with a face as sad as if it were doomsday, is distressed in mind, by her act. Gertrude still doesnt seem to know what act Hamlet is talking about.

To illustrate his point to Gertrude Hamlet takes two miniatures, one of Claudius and one of Hamlet. He first starts to describe old Hamlet, he was a great king that was able to command power, every God seemed to have given him a talent. When people were depressed with mankind they would look to him and he would be able to make them feel better and more assured. He tells Gertrude that that wonderful man was her husband this was your husband and that she should see what the difference is between what he has said and what he is going to say. He starts to describe her new husband, Claudius here is your husband he describes Claudius as a disease that cannot be removed. He tells Gertrude that it cannot be love that she feels for Claudius as she is to old to have the passion and excitement for it, so it must be lust that she is feeling. He asks her what type of person would go from Hamlet to Claudius what judgement would step from this to this?. He goes onto say that something worse than madness has happened to Gertrudes sense as even if she was mad she could not prefer Claudius to her previous husband. Hamlet uses imagery to ask her what kind of evil has deceived her in this game of blindmans bluff, what kind of devil put a blindfold on her? Is it lust?

Hamlet believes that all her senses have gone, but that even if she did have part of her senses then she wouldnt be so confused. He believes that if the devil can encourage the worser nature of the older generation to rebel against their better judgement, then they have no right telling the younger generation what to do. Hamlet explains that in circumstances like these virtue becomes a soft wax melting in the fire of youthful ardour and, that reason acts as a pander to lust. Hamlet uses imagery to explain to Gertrude that things are no longer in the order that they should be “frost itself as actively doth burn” nature has lost its natural order.

When Hamlet has finished telling Gertrude this, she tells him that she doesn’t want him to speak anymore, this is because she feels guilty she tells him that as she looks in on her soul she sees black spots that now cannot be removed, here we see a change in Gertrude, she seems to have realised what she has done and why Hamlet is upset. Hamlet asks her how she could live in such a greasy and foul bed that is full of sin, and he tells her once again that Claudius is not worth even half of what her old husband was worth. After Hamlet has finished speaking he spots the ghost of his father again.

He begins to talk to it; Gertrude who doesn’t see the ghost believes that he is totally mad. Hamlet tells the ghost that he has allowed his emotions to cloud his judgment he believes that he has allowed time to slip by and his commitment to his task of revenge to cool. The ghost tells Hamlet that he has come back to sharpen his will and to remind him of what he has to do; not because he has forgotten but because he is misusing the energies which should be directed towards revenge. He then tells Hamlet that he should go to try and put Gertrudes mind at rest. Gertrude, who still cannot see who Hamlet is talking to, asks him why he is talking to an empty space. She describes how mad he looks to her, he appears to be talking to nothing, his eyes are popping out of his head and his hair is on end; she’s worried about him and she wants him to calm down. She asks him whom he is talking to. Hamlet points to the ghost and describes to her that the look on the ghosts face could make even stones cry, he doesn’t want the ghost to look at him like that as he feels that it will weaken him, he believes that pity is not a state of mind that is likely to generate violent behaviour. As Gertrude is still wondering what is going on, the ghost leaves.

Gertrude believes that everything that Hamlet says he can see, he has created in his imagination; she believes that madness is very skillful in creating. Hamlet tells her that he is not mad, he knows what he is saying and he tells her that he wants her to stop reassuring herself that he is mad, as he believes that that will encourage this to continue. He wants Gertrude to repent for what she has done, here we see Hamlet acting like a moral judge, he sees himself as the only person upholding morality. He becomes sarcastic by asking Gertrude for forgiveness for being a good person; he’s mocking her. Gertrude becomes confused, her heart has been divided into two and she doesnt know in which direction to turn. Hamlet tells her that she should throw away the bad part of her heart and keep the good part of it; he wants her to pretend that she is virtuous even if she isnt. He tells her that when shes goes to sleep tonight she shouldnt go Claudius bed, as this will make the next night away from him easier for her. He tells her that he will pray to be forgiven for what he has done and that at the same time he will also pray for her to be forgiven, he wont ask for her blessing (like a son normally should do) until she is repentant and seeks Gods blessing. Hamlet tells us such has been the will of heaven that he should be punished by being the cause of Poloniuss death, and that because of this Polonius will be punished in death. Hamlet tells Gertrude that he will be honest about the death of Polonius and he carries on to say that he sees the death of Polonius as the bad beginning of a vengeance that will yet be worse.

Getrude asks him what she must do now and Hamlet tells her that she must not let the King tempt her again, she must not tell him what has happened tonight. He tells her that he is not mad, but that he has created this madness I essentially am not in madness, but mad in craft. Once again Hamlet turns sarcastic towards Gertrude and asks her what reason a good and honest Queen may have to keep a secret from a bad and dishonest King, he tells her that if she lets any of this out she will live to suffer and that should do this for her own good. Hamlet uses a fable to illustrate to Gertrude what will happen to her if she tells anyone; she will gain nothing by it and that if she imagines that she can act with the king as cleverly as he can, independently of him, then she will be like the ape trying to fly and so will come to grief. She swears to him that she will not tell a soul.

Hamlet has a plan to do with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, that instead of them trapping him, he will trap them. The scene finishes off by Hamlet telling Gertrude that he could never trust Polonius before, but now that he is dead he can. He says goodnight to Gertrude and then leaves tugging Polonius body behind him. In this scene we can see Hamlets relationship with women and his mother inparticular, even thought he talks to her he is still very suspicious of her and this gives him a bad impression of women in general, he feels as though he cannot trust them.

When does a business cross the line from making a profit to stealing a profit? That is a hard line to gauge. Laws are designed to make that line a little clearer but laws cant out think the mind of man. If a way can be thought of to make money it already has been or is being thought of. Its where people are taken advantage of that we need to worry. There are many business in place that simply prey on the people who dont know any better. Whether its the feature on Prime-Time that shows elderly people tricked into phony home repairs or the local business that offered a friend of mine a computer at an inflated price with an outrageous financing plan, some business practices are unethical. What I will focus on is not clearly right or the clearly wrong but that vast amount of items that are in the middle. Looking at more of a gray area, Wal-Mart is generally viewed as an ethical company but even they have a reputation for unfair competition. Wal-Mart has a marketing plan that targets smaller cities with large- volume discount stores. While this may not appear to be unfair on its face, many people have felt its negative effect. When Wal-Mart moves into a market, many of its smaller competitors go out of business. Small business in small towns cant compete with the prices, availability, or selection of a huge

conglomerate like Wal-Mart. People in the towns dont have much of a choice. Pay more for less or pay less for more? Not a hard decision. But the ultimate effect is that many small businesses cant survive the competition. Is that ethically wrong? That is a very hard call to make.

For retailers, an ethical culture is essential to preserving the customer trust that has enabled the industry to flourish. Implementing this ideal, however, is becoming more of a challenge today than in years past. I attended the allergies and asthma workshop on Sunday. I picked that one because at the beginning of this year I had a really long cold-like sickness, with a terrible deep cough for over a month that left me completely breathless when I played soccer. I went to the doctor many times, always leaving with new medicine and a new inhaler, but the doctor always putting off the asthma test. I was hoping this workshop would be helpful in my research on whether or not I have asthma. I’ve researched it before, so I didn’t learn too much new information, but this is what I did learn.

Asthma is the bronchial constriction of the air passages. It can be a nuisance, and in its worst cases it can be lethal. There is an asthma gene, but since there’s not just one, they haven’t yet found the specific one. The development of asthma can be parallel one’s living environment. For example, urban areas have higher asthma rates. The reason rural has less is because of the hygiene hypothesis. This hypothesis is during development, exposure to farm animals and milk (“good bacteria”) may create better immunity, lessening the chance of asthma development in later years.

Histamines cause asthmatic reactions. Someone will inhale an allergen, which sets off their immune system. Then antibodies are generated, which react with mass cells.

I learned all that, but my favorite part of the festival was spinning the Crest wheel and winning a free toothbrush and toothpaste. Well, either that or the free “healthy whole grain with whole wheat flour and a hint of honey” bread.

Alfred Stieglitz is considered to be the “Father of modern Photography”. He

was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1864 during the Civil War. Stieglitz is

considered to be the father of modern photography because he took the art form

a step further than anyone had before. Before Stieglitz dared to express

photography as an art form, the medium was considered by most to be

“complicated, and cumbersome” and used mostly by professionals as an

objective tool and utilized for its descriptive and recording capabilities. Stieglitz

set out to redefine the art of modern photography. He wanted to display

photograph’s that would shock people and challenge the limits that had

previously been put on photography. Stieglitz wanted people to step outside

their preconceived notion of what art was supposed to look like. He wanted

people to embrace photography as they would a piece of artwork. Modern times

brought many changes and Stieglitz embraced them all. In a series of

photographs, Stieglitz depicted the growth of New York City. He was a master of

the elements, bad lighting and weather changes gave Stieglitz more inspiration

and challenged his skills as a photographer. He supported many up and coming

artists like Picasso, and Czanne, who to were pushing the boundaries of art.

Stieglitz never had hobbies, only passions. He claimed, “The camera was

waiting for me by predestination”, and “I took to it like a musician to a piano or a

painter to the canvas”. By 17 photography and the public’s perception of it had

changed dramatically, due in large part to Stieglitz’s publications Camera Notes,

Camera Work, and 1. Through these publications he introduced photography

from Europe and America, he also included art work, and gave authors, such as

Gertrude Stein a chance to have their work published for the world to read.

I would definitely have to say that Steiglitz deserves the title “Father of modern

Photography”, through his persistence in opening the eyes of America to the

modern 0th century, and helping artists break away from the rigid lines of

precise art and move into the more modern self-expression in art. In the end

Stieglitz was successful in achieving his goal of demonstrating the expressive

power of the medium of photography.

researchers found that smokers reaped less quality-of-life benefits than nonsmokers

smoking makes a difference in general health perception, pain, social function

Smoke from cigars, cigarettes, and pipes harms your body in many ways, but it is especially harmful to the lungs of a person with asthma. Tobacco smoke is a powerful trigger of asthma symptoms

When a person inhales tobacco smoke, irritating substances settle in the moist lining of the airways. These substances can cause an attack in a person who has asthma.

In addition, tobacco smoke damages tiny hair-like structures in the airways called cilia. Normally, cilia sweeps dust and mucus out of the airways. Tobacco smoke damages cilia so they are unable to work, allowing dust and mucus to accumulate in the airways.

Smoke also causes the lungs to make more mucus than normal. As a result, even more mucus can build up in the airways, triggering an attack.

Second-hand smoke is the combination of smoke from a burning cigar or cigarette and smoke exhaled by a smoker.

Inhaling second-hand smoke, also called passive smoke or environmental tobacco smoke, from another person may be even more harmful than actually smoking. Thats because the smoke that burns off the end of a cigar or cigarette contains more harmful substances (tar, carbon monoxide, nicotine, and others) than the smoke inhaled by the smoker.

Second-hand smoke is especially harmful to people who already have asthma. When a person with asthma is exposed to second-hand smoke, he or she is more likely to experience the wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath associated with asthma.

A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that the number one risk factor for heart disease was smoking. Women who smoked 15 or more cigarettes a day had a five times greater risk of developing heart disease than nonsmokers. And women who smoked one to 14 cigarettes a day had three times the risk of developing heart disease compared to women who did not smoke. Overall, 41% of the heart problems reported in this study were directly linked to cigarette smoking

Each day, nearly 4,800 adolescents aged 11 to 17 smoke their first cigarette, and of these, nearly ,000 will become regular smokers. Each year, about 40,700 people die from causes directly related to smoking.

Despite explicit warnings on cigarette packs and those recent terrorist-style commercials on television attacking the tobacco industry, American women still havent heard the whole truth regarding the health problems smoking can cause.

By now, most of us are aware that smokers are at risk for lung and heart disease as well as lung cancer. But those health consequences of smoking affect more men than women. Thats not to say women smokers are not at risk for lung and heart problems, but women do face problems with their reproductive health that men do not.

Over time, smoking can decrease womens levels of the hormone estrogen, putting them at increased risk for the brittle-bone disease osteoporosis. Smoking also has been linked to infertility, early menopause, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, and cervical cancer.

You would probably be amazed if you really could count how each day you are reclaiming your life. Knowing the days, hours, minutes, and money saved reminds us of how long weve been free of this demon nicotine, and it can also remind us of how long our miraculous body has been recovering and reclaiming our health.

Euthanasia

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Euthanasia even at the eleventh hour. “If we are to have free will, that free will should include not only how we live our lives, but how long we live them” (Taylor 00, 0). Euthanasia, the specific term for assisted suicide, has been a century old controversy (Clarfield 00, 8). Its leader in the controversy is Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who has assisted in over 0 deaths since 10. Dr. Kevorkian claims that the medical, religious, journalistic and legal communities won’t stop him. Psychologist Joseph Richman says that, “All suicides, including the “rational,” can be an avoidance of or substitute for dealing with basic life-and-death issues.” So which is right, helping dying people to achieve their last wish, or waiting for God to do his part while the ill sit there and die slowly and painfully? Euthanasia should be legalized in the United States.

Hearing the negatives about euthanasia, the U.S. citizens need to also hear the good points of the topic. The question of who has the right to give or take life has played an important part in the history of technology, with designer babies and altering DNA. But it also contributes to the challenging question of who should be able to take another’s life as in physician’s aide, or euthanasia (Clarfield 00, 8). In 17, the Dutch Council of Health did their own study and decided that euthanasia should be legal. They stated that doctors needed to follow rules and regulations to assist with death (Clarfield 00, 8). Rob Jonquiere states that, “These reactions are often very hypocritical. Doctors all over the world perform euthanasia, but they don’t report it.” (Kolfschooten 00, 15) So even if euthanasia is not legalized, doctors may continue to perform the procedure. So why not legalize euthanasia anyway! “If your life is yours, then it is no one else’s business if you choose to discontinue having experiences” (Flynn 00, 5).

Then the moral issue comes in. Do individuals lives belong to God? Religious leaders will argue that God had control over everyone’s life until death, and physicians shouldn’t take that into their own hands. Although the conflict of euthanasia seems new, the actual procedure has been around since World War I (Clarfield 00, 8). It became a strong issue in the 10’s and 0’s, growing again in the 60’s and 70’s (Clarfield 00, 8). New laws are still occurring, the last one updated by Dutch euthanasia describes new regulations on April first 00 (Kolfschooten 00, 15). Many supporters of euthanasia also advocated sterilization laws (Payne 00, 57). But are the supporters agreeing with euthanasia because of their feelings towards the ill? Seventy to eighty percent of people polled that they felt sympathetic towards the terminally ill (Payne 00, 57). Even if this happens to be true, euthanasia still was morally acceptable in their views. Just like divorce, marrying outside of a persons’ racial class, and issues dealing with social classes, euthanasia shall overcome obstacles of moral, ethical, and political views with time. People just need to realize that keeping someone alive against their will, happens to be more morally wrong than giving them what they want and rightfully deserve.

Although euthanasia is illegal in the United States and its considered a taboo by most; some examples are shown in the following lines that would like to see physician-aided death prevail (Flynn 00, 4). Freddie, who after being diagnosed with cancer refused chemotherapy as a treatment for the illness. He went in for surgery and had his bladder removed. A few days later the doctors told him that the surgery was unsuccessful, and the cancer had spread to other organs. Freddie’s first week in the hospital was unbearable, waking up to day after day of pain because of laws against assisted suicide. His had spent the last three weeks in the hospital, the last one of which he spent unconscious, hooked up to machines. With a needle in each arm one to keep him alive, and the other to keep him asleep safe from the pain (Taylor 00, -0).

Sidney Cohen was diagnosed with cancer in November and was told that he would die within three months. By January 1st, Sidney was in pain, and bed-bounded praying for euthanasia. He was allowed only to drink water for six weeks, and became desperate, isolated, and frightened (Arthur 00, 1). Sidney had no reason to live his life, because in his position his life couldn’t be acceptable. People should be able to decide if their life amounts to a “life not worthy to be lived,” as Dr. Leo Alexander said that the euthanasia debate started with this question. Alexander said that there would be a rising time of death with dignity movement, or assisted suicide, which Oregon has now legalized (Washington 00, 1). The law legalizing euthanasia became a landmark law for the Oregon people when they received adequate pain relief (Washington 11, 1).

If the option of euthanasia is not available to some, the ill may take their own life as Carol Ezzell did. She did not qualify for physician aide in Holland. So she took her own life in a needlessly vile way, and her loved ones had no chance to say their last goodbyes. Because of Carol’s many years of anguished sickness and the doctors only promising worse to come, she did not see any other solution to her problem (Flynn 00, 5). That brings us back to the controversy of should euthanasia be legalized? Yeah, there happen to be ways to live longer for those that are not quite on their deathbed, but it is the patient’s decision if they don’t want to live longer. Is it not?

Having so many ways to misuse euthanasia, the United States has not passed a bill to legalize. Most doctors today in the United States that have patients in a comatose state do what their family feels happens to be right or with his or her own discretion. And if that is keeping them asleep until their last minutes of life, most doctors consider what they call terminal sedation, legal in the United States (Kolfschooten 00, 15). Physicians the world over administer pain-killing drugs to terminally ill patients that have the effect of killing them. The difference is that we do it openly, says Henk Leenen, lawyer of the medical ethics department (Wright 00, 1061). Doctors can sneak around the euthanasia debate this way. They call it the administration of a sedative medication to ease pain and agony. Doctors in the Netherlands use terminal sedation to get around having to get a second opinion. Although this technique will help the patient out tremendously it is proved that the sleep inducing drugs ends lives early (Kolfschooten 00, 15).

Using euthanasia properly in the United States, there needs to be a system of rule that is followed religiously. The Netherlands adopted the first laws that allowed euthanasia to be legal. The Dutch euthanasia regulations were set into law on April first of 00 and Henk Leenen says that all it needs to do to stay legal is follow the guidelines that the Dutch Medical Society introduced, while Europe allows the issue (Wright 00, 1061). The rules and regulations have to be followed in order to qualify for the procedure in the Netherlands; the rules include these four regulations (1) that the patient would have to be 1 years of age or older () to be of sound mind () to be suffering from severe physical pain (4) and to have an incurable ailment (Clarfield 00, 8). Although the ESA (Euthanasia Society of America) proposed a bill in the United States that would make the patient have to petition the courts and other doctors would have to examine the patient for the treatment before euthanasia to be performed, however the bill did not pass (Clarfield 00, 8). The United States should come up with rules like the Netherlands did, or just use regulations that they came up with. US doctors or doctors in general are not hanging over the bedside of these ill people trying to save money for the hospital or for the persons’ family (Payne 00, 57).

I think that Wesley Smith stated it best when he said, “We all age. We fall ill. We grow weak. We become disabled. A day comes when our need to receive from our fellows adds to far more than our ability to give in return. When we reach that stage of life…will we still be deemed persons entitled to equal protection under the law?” I certainly hope so. When I get old I want to have the right to choose to end my life. I want my rights that were guaranteed to me in the United States Constitution about my personal freedom. I would like to be able to do what I please without the government running my life. I thought that happens to be what a capitalism government is all about. Being to do what you want, when you want to, without some official questioning your sanity.
