An important property of semiconductors is the ability to change their resistivity over several orders of magnitude by doping. Semiconductors have electrical resistivities between 10-5 and 107 ohms. Semiconductors can be crystalline or amorphous. Elemental semiconductors are simple-element semiconductor materials such as silicon or germanium.

By 147 the transistor was invented. The Bell Labs research team sought a way of directly altering the electrical properties of semiconductor material. They learned they could change and control these properties by doping the semiconductor, or infusing it with selected elements, heated to a gaseous phase. When the semiconductor was also heated, atoms from the gases would seep into it and modify its pure, crystal structure by displacing some atoms. Because these dopant atoms had different amount of electrons than the semiconductor atoms, they formed conductive paths. If the dopant atoms had more electrons than the semiconductor atoms, the doped regions were called n-type to signify and excess of negative charge. Less electrons, or an excess of positive charge, created p-type regions. By allowing this dopant to take place in carefully delineated areas on the surface of the semiconductor, p-type regions could be created within n-type regions, and vice-versa. The transistor was much smaller than the vacuum tube, did not get very hot, and did not require a headed filament that would eventually burn out.
Finally in 158, integrated circuits were invented. By the mid 150’s, the first commercial transistors were being shipped. However research continued. The scientist began to think that if one transistor could be built within one solid piece of semiconductor material, why not multiple transistors or even an entire circuit. With in a few years this speculation became one solid piece of material. These integrated circuits(ICs) reduced the number of electrical interconnections required in a piece of electronic equipment, thus increasing reliability and speed. In contrast, the first digital electronic computer built with 18,000 vacuum tubes and weighed 50 tons, cost about 1 million, required 140 kilowatts of power, and occupied an entire room. Today, a complete computer, fabricated within a single piece of silicon the size of a child’s fingernail, cost only about $10.00.
Now I will tell you the method of how the integrated circuits and the silicon chip is formed. Before the IC is actually created a large scale drawing, about 400 times larger than the actual size is created. It takes approximately one year to create an integrated circuit. Then they have to make a mask. Depending on the level of complexity, an IC will require from 5 to 18 different glass masks, or work plates to create the layers of circuit patterns that must be transferred to the surface of a silicon wafer. Mask-making begins with an electron-beam exposure system called MEBES. MEBES translates the digitized data from the pattern generating tape into physical form by shooting an intense beam of electrons at a chemically coated glass plate. The result is a precise rendering, in its exact size, of a single circuit layer, often less than one-quarter inch square. Working with incredible precision , it can produce a line one-sixtieth the width of a human hair.
After purification, molten silicon is doped, to give it a specific electrical characteristic. Then it is grown as a crystal into a cylindrical ingot. A diamond saw is used to slice the ingot into thin, circular wafers which are then polished to a perfect mirror finish mechanically and chemically. At this point IC fabrication is ready to begin.
To begin the fabrication process, a silicon wafer (p-type, in this case) is loaded into a 100 C furnace through which pure oxygen flows. The end result is an added layer of silicon dioxide (SiO), grown on the surface of the wafer. The oxidized wafer is then coated with photoresist, a light-sensitive, honey-like emulsion. In this case we use a negative resist that hardens when exposed to ultra-violet light. To transfer the first layer of circuit patterns, the appropriate glass mask is placed directly over the wafer. In a machine much like a very precise photographic enlarger, an ultraviolet light is projected through the mask. The dark pattern on the mask conceals the wafer beneath it, allowing the photoresist to stay soft; but in all other areas, where light passes through the clear glass, the photoresist hardens. The wafer is then washed in a solvent that removes the soft photoresist, but leaves the hardened photoresist on the wafer. Where the photoresist was removed, the oxide layer is exposed. An etching bath removes this exposed oxide, as well as the remaining photoresist. What remains is a stencil of the mask pattern, in the form of minute channels of oxide and silicon. The wafer is placed in a diffusion furnace which will be filled with gaseous compounds (all n-type dopants), for a process known as impurity doping. In the hot furnace, the dopant atoms enter the areas of exposed silicon, forming a pattern of n-type material. An etching bath removes the remaining oxide, and a new layer of silicon (n-) is deposited onto the wafer. The first layer of the chip is now complete, and the masking process begins again a new layer of oxide is grown, the wafer is coated with photoresist, the second mask pattern is exposed to the wafer, and the oxide is etched away to reveal new diffusion areas. The process is repeated for every mask - as many as 18 - needed to create a particular IC. Of critical importance here is the precise alignment of each mask over the wafer surface. It is out of alignment more than a fraction of a micrometer (one-millionth of a meter), the entire wafer is useless. During the last diffusion a layer of oxide is again grown over the water. Most of this oxide layer is left on the wafer to serve as an electrical insulator, and only small openings are etched through the oxide to expose circuit contact areas. To interconnect these areas, a thin layer of metal (usually aluminum) is deposited over the entire surface. The metal dips down into the circuit contact areas, touching the silicon. Most of the surface metal is then etched away, leaving an interconnection pattern between the circuit elements. The final layer is vapox, or vapour-deposited-oxide, a glass-like material that protects the IC from contamination and damage. It, too, is etched away, but only above the bonding pads, the square aluminum areas to which wires will later be attached.

desert at night, he learned all about the masterwork and the many things that he needed to do
in order to become a true alchemist. He began to have a dream about a group of rebels attacking
the oasis because they thought that the travelers would be taking up arms against them. The boy
went to the men who were in charge of the oasis and told them of the impending doom that was
coming onto the oasis. They didnt believe that this dream was an omen but they gave him one
shot. The rebels did attack and they were able to fend off all of the assailants. The boy was
hailed as a hero and he went off into the desert to seek his personal legend. Here he was
forced to make a decision about whether or not to leave behind the woman that he had met and

that was that the theme was ever changing. Within the main theme there were many other small
themes that helped to develop the main theme, but added to the confusion of the novel. The
thing that I liked about this book was that it was very straightforward and left nothing up to
the imagination. If I were to rewrite this book I would change it by adding in a little more
bad things that happen to the main character to show the real hardships that he had faced while
chasing his personal legend. If I would have had the opportunity to speak to the boy in the
book I would have told him that he should have stayed on at the crystal shop because he had a
good thing going and he could have made a lot of money and bought his own happiness and
realized his personal legend in his own rite. One thing that reminded me of another book that
I read was In the Lake of the Woods, because both of the main characters were trying to run
away from what had been in their lives to find something better. I would recommend this book
to anyone who was undecided about what their life was meaning to them. This book really gives
them insight about their lives and that someone is worried about them and that there is
something that they have to look forward to, like the crystal merchant.

The Duke in Act , scene we first see the Duke disguised as Friar Lodewick and he seems very helpful, caring and virtuous which of course are the traits that made him the Duke he was. The Duke’s action seem to be very unselfious, he gives up his power because he feels he is not fulfilling his duty and goes out of his way to help the grieving Juliet. Then the Duke meets Isabella and falls for her beauty he even goes as far as saying that ‘the hand that has made you fair hath made you good’. Emily Dickinson is one of the few poets that I can relate and empathize with. I find her poetry to be extremely moving and touching. Her diction or brevity in the poem, “Success is Counted Sweetest” is remarkable and meaningful. I enjoyed every moment of this poem, not only because it’s touching in many ways, but because the diction and symbolism of each stanza, sentence, and word, meant something special. It was easy to read and after I got the hang of it, it was easy to understand and explain.
Like any other reader would do, I began to read the poem from beginning of line one to the end of line 1. I read it about three to four times before it actually started to click. Her first two lines, “Success is counted sweetest By those who ne’er succeed.” is a mere summary of this poem. In the non poetic terms, all it means is, those who don’t succeed tend to appreciate success better then those who always do. What intrigued me was her choice of the phrase “counted sweetest”. No one can really say success is sweet like a candy, but she chose sweet because it fit better than any other word. For example, the word best would sound horrible in that sentence and not give it the brightness of sweet.
Her next few lines, “To comprehend a nectar Requires sorest need.” is an exceptional ending to that stanza. What I came to find out is that the word nectar actually can mean triumph. So when I substituted triumph into that sentence the whole poem turned around and made complete sense. But it all soon changed when Roger, who she believed was her one true love, stands her up. “Now the world is cold and gray and unfeeling”. Here we see Alice with a typical teenage problem, boys, but Alice gets deeply depressed and is convinced that her life has no more meaning.
Alice’s life changes once again, when they move. Alice has mixed feelings about the move. In one hand it’s a chance to start over, new friends, new life, new Alice. And on the other hand there is leaving Gran and Gramps, the house, friends and most of all not being able to fit into the new town. “Oh dear god please help me adjust, help me be accepted, help me belong, don’t let me be a social outcast”. The new town, house and school bring the worst for Alice. “It as was miserable! It was the loneliest, coldest place in the world”. In the new town Alice can’t make friends and can’t fit in. Alice hates everything, she is depressed, puts on weight, and her mother is always on her back, nagging.

Jill invited Alice to a party, Alice finally felt accepted and that she belonged, she was part of the popular group. People liked her for being her. This was the party that introduced Alice to drugs. It seemed innocent, slipping some into her drink, but for Alice this was the beginning of the end. “For whatever I was, I was wonderful, for the first time in my whole life that I could remember I was totally uninhabited”. The drugs turn Alice into the person she always wanted to be.
Alice can’t believe what she has done; its wrong and the normal Alice wouldn’t do it. “I’ve tried to convince myself that using LSD makes me a ‘dope addict’. Alice tries to convince herself that she can’t do drugs anymore, because she will turn into an addict. But she is so, so, so curious, and can’t wait to try pot. She is already planning to get some to try. ”It’s a completely new world I am exploring”. Alice tried drugs once and now can’t think about anything else. She thinks that she will try pot once then go home and forget the whole drug set-up.
Alice starts seeing Bill, who she met at the party and he introduces her to speed and torpedoes. Alice also looses her virginity with Bill, while under the influence of acid. At the time Alice thinks it is great, but it is not until after the whole incident she begins to worry. “I’m so horribly, nauseously mixed up and- what if I am pregnant?”. The good Alice comes back, as she wants to go home, get away from drugs and the group. She begins to worry about what her family and Roger will think of her. “I hate this rotten place and I hate Bill and that crowd”. Alice is beginning to realize what drugs do to people.
In the mist of all of this, Alice’ Gramps has a miniature heart attack. Alice decides to stay longer and help Gran. Roger is around and keeps trying to talk to Alice, but Alice is ashamed to talk to him after all that she has been doing lately. She is finding it hard to cope with life and the stress of everything, so she starts to take her Gramps’ sleeping pills. When she finally does go home she gets more pills from the doctor, she relies on them to get through every day.
Alice is drifting further away from her family. “They keep saying that I am a nice girl, but I am beginning to act like a hippie and they’re afraid the wrong people will be drawn to me”. Alice has changed from being the sweet innocent girl who did everything right, to a drug-addicted teen. Back at home Alice is not the same person she is confused, needs to talk and be listened to. Her parents are always harping about the way she looks and acts. The only person she has is roger, whom she is writing to. That is until she meets Chris. Chris understands Alice, but gets her back into the drug world. Alice and Chris get close and talk a lot about family problems, and running away. They plan to go to San Francisco and start over, forget all the family problems, run away form their worries. “I finally smoked pot and it was even greater than I expected”. Chris fixed Alice up with a college friend of hers, who got Alice onto pot. Alice is so drug influenced that she believes that she really loves this guy. She doesn’t see that it is the drugs.

At the time Alice thinks it is great, but it is not until after the whole incident she begins to worry. “I’m so horribly, nauseously mixed up and- what if I am pregnant?”.
