Also, the citizens of the town recently had to endure a smallpox epidemic and are under a constant threat of Native American assaults, denying them a sense of physical security (“Salem,” par. ). This persistent apprehension explodes into hysteria as the girls’ accusations transform the supernatural into a tangible threat. Trials are held to try the accused but even as it becomes evident that the trials are based on faulty evidence and logic, no one questions the validity of the proceedings, because they fear that if they do, they will be labeled as a witch. When a local townsman, Francis Nurse, presents a petition protesting the imprisonment of two of the prisoners, the court summons all the petitioners for questioning (Miller 4). The fear of being associated with the supernatural compelled many to accept the blatantly faulty proceedings and allowed the trials to spiral out of control, eventually taking 7 lives. Therefore, the pervasive terror of external forces, such as disease and God, allowed for the hysteria but the fear of one another caused the hysteria to linger, inflicting even more damage. Had there not been an atmosphere filled with insecurity, the events in Salem could never have ballooned to such proportions. This fear is an innate human characteristic that causes events such as these to repeat throughout the course of history.

The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a historical novel that details how hysteria overwhelms the small devout town of Salem, Massachusetts after local girls are caught performing a pagan ritual. Knowing that this act could incur death in their pious community, these girls accuse their fellow town members of being witches to convince others that they have forsaken the devil and have returned to the Lord. History has shown that given the right atmosphere, any spark could set off a chain reaction much like that described in The Crucible.
The atmosphere of the fanatically religious town of Salem was a breeding ground for fear and suspicion. The minister, Parris, “[preaches] only hellfire and bloody damnation” (Miller 8), encouraging a constantly apprehensive attitude towards God’s power. Also, the citizens of the town recently had to endure a smallpox epidemic and are under a constant threat of Native American assaults, denying them a sense of physical security (“Salem,” par. ). This persistent apprehension explodes into hysteria as the girls’ accusations transform the supernatural into a tangible threat. Trials are held to try the accused but even as it becomes evident that the trials are based on faulty evidence and logic, no one questions the validity of the proceedings, because they fear that if they do, they will be labeled as a witch. When a local townsman, Francis Nurse, presents a petition protesting the imprisonment of two of the prisoners, the court summons all the petitioners for questioning (Miller 4). The fear of being associated with the supernatural compelled many to accept the blatantly faulty proceedings and allowed the trials to spiral out of control, eventually taking 7 lives. Therefore, the pervasive terror of external forces, such as disease and God, allowed for the hysteria but the fear of one another caused the hysteria to linger, inflicting even more damage. Had there not been an atmosphere filled with insecurity, the events in Salem could never have ballooned to such proportions. This fear is an innate human characteristic that causes events such as these to repeat throughout the course of history.
During the McCarthy Era of the 150’s, the mood of the United States was extremely similar to that of Salem, Massachusetts, making it especially susceptible to similar problems. To the Americas, the spread of communism after World War II seemed be a direct attack on their democratic and capitalistic ideals. The same pattern of events from The Crucible repeats itself during the McCarthy Era, demonstrating the inevitability of another hysterical scare. Fear is a human nature that is a constant in every culture.

The camera shot with then change to the narrator, a softly spoken female for a sympathetic motherly feel, walking towards the camera though a hospital nursing room. Saying, “Imagine you’re a new parent. You walk into a freshly painted nursery, which you painted yourself to check on you’re beautiful baby. And you’re child is dead.” She then continues to talk about why your baby is dead, and how hundreds of parents over Australia have to deal with this exact situation each year. But they aren’t imagining it.
An interview will then be conducted of parents who have lost children to SIDS. The first and main interviewee is Val the mother of Spenser a baby boy who died on the nd of August 187 when he only 4 and a half months old. The camera starts to zoom in on Val as she starts talking “It still hurts when I think of him. I can’t help but wonder what sports he would have enjoyed”. Spenser would have been 16 in March this year. An interview with Spenser’s Dad and older brother Zac will then be conducted and an interview with other families to show how it effects different people.
A doctor will then be interviewed to explain the known medical reasons that are known and talk about the steps that can be put in place to try and prevent SIDS.
An interview with a counsellor dealing with families who have lost babies to SIDS will be conducted. The counsellor will explain the grief the parent and siblings deal with when they lose a baby to SIDS.
And to conclude my documentary still photographs of the babies who’s parents were interviewed will be shown while Val says “when Spenser died so long ago, I said I would always remember his laugh, but I can’t remember how it sounded anymore. This realization makes me very sad because memories are all I have left of him, and I’m losing those too. But when I’m sad, it makes me feel better to know that someday I’m going to see him… in heaven”.

Between 18 and 16, there were almost 0,000 infant deaths in Australia, of which about 5,500 were due to SIDS. For the amount of children this kills each year not enough people are aware of the condition. And if they are aware the common ‘it won’t happen to me’ occurs. People need to know more about the condition and more about the ways to prevent it. And the way of doing this is to put it on television. This particular topic will attract a enormous amount of viewers and is low on budget. Ms. King lives alone in one bedroom apartment. She is in the process of taking college courses over the Internet. Ms. King is also the mother of a sixteen-year-old teenager who lived with her grandmother all her life and is an active member in her church. After, our 45 minutes conversation on the phone I wondered how is it that a blind person can be so talkative humorous and really sound content with life. Within seconds I felt silly to think that way when neither is a correlation of the other. I thought there was more and prehaps she was hiding behind the phone and that she wasn’t as content with life, so we made plans to meet at her home during the week.
Through out the course of the two interviews my mind kept going back to Bill Porter from Door to Door. I kept trying to figure out what makes a person so accepting of anything that comes their way. Ms. King answered that question by stating, “I am comfortable with how the Lord daily shakes and mold my journey. At that point I thought of myself how I find discontentment in everything and here is this woman who once had the ability to see all the things I take for granted yet she is content. In fact the day of the interview I had to go to court for a traffic violation and pay an obscene amount of money. I thought about canceling the meeting with Ms. King because from my felt I have just had one of the worst days of my life. One of the things Ms. King expressed was that she had just began driving during the time she lost her sight. She admitted to at times wishing she could jump in a car to go buy her own groceries. Unfortunately, she states her driving privileges were taken from her without choice. When the interview was over hearing about all her trails and tribulation, I thought hasn’t the days of her life been worse than my days?
Before I even met Ms. King one of the questions that was lingering in my mind was how does she live without experiencing a romantic relationship in her life? Although I wasn’t sure how I was going to ask her something so personal, I really wanted to know. Luckily, Ms. King bought up the topic as we discussed her relationship with her daughter. Ms. King saw her daughter as a remarkable, and inspirational person because she accepts her as her mother. I wondered would I ever have the ability to allow myself to receive inspiration from a child. During this topic, I took it as my chance to ask, “Do you date?” She started to laugh saying, point me in the direction of a good man and I’m there.” I wondered why doesn’t she feel sorry for herself? Why isn’t she upset that she will never see the young lady that her daughter is growing into? Why isn’t she dwelling on the fact that she more than likely will not get married? She will not have any more children and mainly experience romantic love. I thought something wasn’t right here these are things most women strive for she’ll never have them and she is fine with that. It is oblivious because she found a form of peace and contentment within herself; which is actually what most women should be striving for. What good does it serves us to dwell on negative things. I shamefully thought about the countless hours I’ve spent dwelling on not having a partner in my life. I thought about how I would think of my older single girlfriends and feared being single at their age. Now I’m staring to evaluate myself and I wonder why am I so preoccupied with things I have no control over. Could it be that I can only truly accept life itself, by accepting the events in my life?
By the end of the interview I was really starting to be filled with a lot of guilt. I was starting to feel more embarrassed over all the tedious things I fuss over in life. On the other hand how could a blind person not have any discontentment for life? How could she not feel sorry for herself? When Ms. King stated that being blind has enabled her to inspire others in their lives, the level of her sensitivity amazed me. I thought what is it that allows this woman to strive and have such a positive out look on life despite the fact that life has dealt her a tough hand? It appears that acceptance of one’s circumstances is the key. Sometimes a tornado sweeps into our lives without cause or warning. While we can’t prevent it, we can live through it. Ms. King expressed that her faith, family, and friends got her to where she is and that they are her inspiration. I was still trying to understand why wouldn’t a relationship be an inspiration? I actually knew the answer it serves no purpose dwelling on the things you can’t or don’t have.
As I walked to my car from Ms. King’s house I found my self-looking at my surround’s which felt like I was seeing them for the first time. I unconsciously looked at the bird that flew over my head not annoyed that it flew extremely too close to my head. My mind kept going back to how does one live without sight? I obsessively pondered on the thought of what if I lost my vision. Would I have the remarkable strength to live a gracious dignified life or would I wallow in my sorrows. After, evaluating all my notes from the interview it became clear to me that in that tiny neat apartment live a soft spoken women with a story of compassion, love, understanding, and acceptance to tell. How could a blind person who can’t see the world we live in have better perception of it than me? As I conducted my interviews with Ms. King more and more questions raised in my head and I’m still pondering on them. I’m constantly imagining myself in her situation. I’m constantly wondering how come she is in this situation. Maybe Ms. King was right God allowed her to go blind because he knew she could handle it and clearly she has embraced her disability without any anger or guilt; and that in it self is a life lesson for all.

With the addition of words like discoloured monsters and real sea we can tell what the boys feeling are toward his beach which he considers scary but at the same time challenging.

It conveys the life of “the perfect couple” of the 1th century yet goes into more depth in revealing the troubles and sufferings sometimes found in this ideal lifestyle. Nora is the main character of the play, the main action and scandal takes place between her and her husband of eight years, Torvald Helmer, a lawyer who has just been promoted to manager in the bank where he works. The other characters that appear include Dr Rank, a good family friend who comes to the house at least once a day; Nils Krogstad, a lawyer who works in the same bank as Torvald; Christine Linde, a school friend of Nora’s who has come to visit Nora, hoping to find work; the nurse and Nora and Torvald’s three young children. The entire play takes place in Torvald’s house over the Christmas period.
The relationship between Nora and Torvald is a very uneven one. Torvald’s tone is that of a father talking to a young child. Ibsen writes typically in a way that the characters might talk in relation to their position and their relationship with each other. For example, it would have been expected at that time for a woman to treat her husband as a superior, to show respect and loyalty to her husband and abide by his rules. However, the way that Torvald speaks to Nora shows that he is using her, just like how Torvald always refers to his wife as a skylark, and in the third act when he says, “playtime shall be over and lessons begin”. It would be thought that by this, Torvald would be referring to the children, Nora even asks whose lessons he is referring to, and it is quite shocking when he says hers and the children’s. This shows how much he considers her as a child, just like how he always calls her a “skylark” symbolizes the way that Torvald always teaches his wife as a child.
We discover a breakthrough in Nora’s character, who has an epiphany towards the end of the play. We know that at the time that Nora’s father was dying, Torvald was seriously ill. This was due to overwork, and to save his life, he needed rest. So Nora took him away on a trip to Italy, which she told Torvald her father had help pay for, as they did not have the money. We learn in fact, that the money was not from her father, and he had had no idea of what was going on, he was dying at the time, and Nora had in fact borrowed the money from Krogstad. In order to borrow this money, Nora had to get her father to sign the bond drafted by Krogstad. But she made a mistake, in giving away that she had forged her father’s signature, by dating the document the second of October, three days after her father’s death. She did not tell Torvald that she borrowed the money; she knew how much he did not approve of her borrowing the money. Krogstad sees the mistakes and confronts Nora, forcing her to reveal the truth, and threatening to reveal her secret to Torvald if she does not try to get Torvald to give Krogstad his job back, who had been dismissed as a result of forgery himself. It is through all this lying and playing that Nora sees that she no longer belongs in this household, and it is at this time that Nora has her epiphany. She realises that she has no control whatsoever in the family and no purpose, for all her life, she has followed her father, in what he has said and done, and now, she has been passed to her husband, as if she was a doll, being passed from person to person “our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll wife just as at home I was Papa’s doll child; and here the children have been my dolls”, she wants to discover who she is, and to do so, she has to leave.

This is a play written in 187 by the Norwegian poet and playwright Henrik Ibsen. It conveys the life of “the perfect couple” of the 1th century yet goes into more depth in revealing the troubles and sufferings sometimes found in this ideal lifestyle. When first released, the play was a scandal, shocking audiences, due solely to the fact that it was so correct and truthful. Nora is the main character of the play, the main action and scandal takes place between her and her husband of eight years, Torvald Helmer, a lawyer who has just been promoted to manager in the bank where he works. The other characters that appear include Dr Rank, a good family friend who comes to the house at least once a day; Nils Krogstad, a lawyer who works in the same bank as Torvald; Christine Linde, a school friend of Nora’s who has come to visit Nora, hoping to find work; the nurse and Nora and Torvald’s three young children. The entire play takes place in Torvald’s house over the Christmas period.
The relationship between Nora and Torvald is a very uneven one. Torvald’s tone is that of a father talking to a young child. Ibsen writes typically in a way that the characters might talk in relation to their position and their relationship with each other. For example, it would have been expected at that time for a woman to treat her husband as a superior, to show respect and loyalty to her husband and abide by his rules. However, the way that Torvald speaks to Nora shows that he is using her, just like how Torvald always refers to his wife as a skylark, and in the third act when he says, “playtime shall be over and lessons begin”. It would be thought that by this, Torvald would be referring to the children, Nora even asks whose lessons he is referring to, and it is quite shocking when he says hers and the children’s. This shows how much he considers her as a child, just like how he always calls her a “skylark” symbolizes the way that Torvald always teaches his wife as a child.
We discover a breakthrough in Nora’s character, who has an epiphany towards the end of the play. We know that at the time that Nora’s father was dying, Torvald was seriously ill. This was due to overwork, and to save his life, he needed rest. So Nora took him away on a trip to Italy, which she told Torvald her father had help pay for, as they did not have the money. We learn in fact, that the money was not from her father, and he had had no idea of what was going on, he was dying at the time, and Nora had in fact borrowed the money from Krogstad. In order to borrow this money, Nora had to get her father to sign the bond drafted by Krogstad. But she made a mistake, in giving away that she had forged her father’s signature, by dating the document the second of October, three days after her father’s death. She did not tell Torvald that she borrowed the money; she knew how much he did not approve of her borrowing the money. Krogstad sees the mistakes and confronts Nora, forcing her to reveal the truth, and threatening to reveal her secret to Torvald if she does not try to get Torvald to give Krogstad his job back, who had been dismissed as a result of forgery himself. It is through all this lying and playing that Nora sees that she no longer belongs in this household, and it is at this time that Nora has her epiphany. She realises that she has no control whatsoever in the family and no purpose, for all her life, she has followed her father, in what he has said and done, and now, she has been passed to her husband, as if she was a doll, being passed from person to person “our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll wife just as at home I was Papa’s doll child; and here the children have been my dolls”, she wants to discover who she is, and to do so, she has to leave.
