I believe “The American Dream”, is the idea that life in America assures certain things and that it guarantees a certain way of life. According to this ideal, the United States is the land of freedom and opportunity which guarantees; Stability and comfort in the home, Success in a good job and nuclear family and the Ability to overcome difficulties. Therefore the people, who strive for “The American Dream”, are looking for these three things and believe it is the only way to survive in a harsh world.
In your play Death of a Salesman Willy Loman a sixty year old Brooklyn salesman accepts “The American Dream” and struggles to attain it throughout the play. Biff on the other hand is the opposite of Willy and he rejects “The American Dream”.
A related text that also is critical of “The American Dream” is the movie by Sam Menandez American Beauty, in this movie Lester rejects “The American Dream” as he realises that it is unsatisfying.
Arthur in your play, Willy Loman stands accused of the worst thing that can happen to a man in 0th century American; failure. The great American myth is that the world lies open to you, and its archetypal embodiment is the salesman. If you fail, you are jobless and placeless; we know that Willy Loman failed when he says “I still feel kind of temporary about myself”, as this shows that he is unsatisfied and lacks hope in his life, also the word “temporary” suggests that he is unsettled, especially as his job as a salesman requires him to travel all the time. Willy accepts “The American Dream” as he has been indoctrinated that it is the only dream to strive for, he believes that it is the panacea to all problems and will lead to fulfilment and safety but we see that in the end Willy was naive to think that it is the answer to all his problems as he ends up committing suicide because of the all great “American Dream”. In your play Willy gets fired because he is a salesman who can’t sell, Willy views his “firing” as an indictment on his whole personality. As Charley says on page 77 “the only thing you’ve got in this world is what you can sell”. Now that Willy has no job his “American Dream”, is falling apart and he feels like his identity is crushed and his way of relating to the world is destroyed and even results in borrowing money because he can not face the reality that he has been fired. When Happy says to Biff, “Dad is never so happy as when he’s looking forward to something”, shows that Willy is happy when he is living in a dream world which is why he is so adamant to achieve “The American Dream”, because he is living in a fantasy world.
In Death of a Salesman Biff rejects “The American Dream”, unlike his father Willy and brother Happy who accept it. Biff rejects “The American Dream” as he perceives it to be false and can see through it, he also has seen that it has a detriment effect on the world as shown by the death of his father and he blames his father’s death on “The American Dream” when at his funeral he says “He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong”. Biff realises that his father was a phoney and he accepts reality and moves on with his life and tries to get Happy to face the reality that the reason his father died was because of his strong ambition to attain the false

The man would eventually grow used to his new surroundings and wonder how he lived without it previously. He would look back on the way he used to live and realize how unknowledgeable he was. He would understand that the reality that he was once sealed with was not the same reality for those outside the cave. It was not the only way to live. He would lose respect for the way he used to live, and respect for those he had sat chained with whom he had once shared so much in common. He would prefer any fate to such a life as the one he was formerly living, even if it meant being on Earth as a hired servant in the house of a landless man. Any fate would be better than to have been somewhat enlightened and to have it all taken away.
If he were to be put back down into the cave after his period of enlightenment, he would have to readjust to the dull lights, shadows and echoes he had never thought twice about before. Now he knew that the light came from a fire, the echoes came from voices, and the shadows came from real, three-dimensional figures. How could he possibly go back to looking at these illusions the same way again, knowing of the realities his enlightenment had brought to him?

These men would not gain enlightenment unless they were forced outside themselves to experience the firsthand pain that goes along with it. Linda knows that Willy has been trying to commit suicide, but does not intervene in order not to embarrass him. She lets it continue because she is not one to cause trouble.
The play is divided into three main parts, Act I, Act II, and the Requiem. Each section takes place on a different day in present-day. Within Act I and Act II, the story is presented through the use of Willys flashbacks. This use of flashback is fundamental to the structure and understanding of the play. The story starts at present-day and Willy then lapses in and out of the past. Each flashback is somehow related to the present. Very often the contents of the flashback offer essential background knowledge for understanding why the present-day problems in the Loman family are occurring. For example, when Willy is thinking about Biff and Biffs problems, Willy is transported to the summer of Biffs senior year. Events from the past expose for the reader the situations that have led up to the present-day boiling point in the Loman household.
Throughout the play the Lomans in general cannot distinguish between reality and illusion, particularly Willy. This is a major theme and source of conflict in the play. Certain lines in the play point to this character flaw that is present in Willy, Happy, and (for a time) Biff. For example, Willy believes that to be well liked is the means to being successful. This is an illusion that Willy lives in. Also, on the literal level, Willy very often lapses into a flashback and appears to be reliving conversations and situations that occurred years ago. This itself is an inability to see reality.
This reality versus illusion problem eventually brings about Willys downfall. In the end, Willy believes that a man can be worth more dead than alive. Charlie, always the voice of reality tells Willy, A man isnt worth anything dead.
Willy is also unable to see change. He is lost in the modern era of technology. He says, How can they whip cheese? and is constantly In a race with the junkyard. Willy has lost at trying to live the American Dream, and the play can be viewed as a commentary to society. Willy was a man who was worked all his life by the machinery of Democracy and Free Enterprise and was then spit out mercilessly, spent like a piece of fruit.

The woods/jungle and diamonds Uncle Ben is the character who deals with the motif of the jungle (sometimes referred to by Willy as the woods) and diamonds. These motifs are symbols. The garden is symbolic of Willy needing to leave something behind for people to remember him by. Something that people will think about and remember him as a great man. As Willy has grown older, he has trouble distinguishing between the past and present - between illusion and reality - and is often lost in flashbacks where much of the story is told. These flashbacks are generally during the summer after Biffs senior year of high school when all of the family problems began.
Willy has had an affair with a woman he meets on sales trips and once he was caught by Biff. Now, Biff does not respect Willy and they do not get along. Eventually Willy commits suicide so that Biff can have the insurance money to become successful with.
Linda Loman
Linda is Willys wife and is the arbiter of peace in the family. She is always trying to stand between Willy and her sons to ease the tension. She is protective of Willy. She knows that Willy is tired and is a man at the end of his rope - the end of his life and, as he put it, ringing up a zero. She wants him to be happy even when the reality of the situation is bad. Linda knows that Willy has been trying to commit suicide, but does not intervene in order not to embarrass him. She lets it continue because she is not one to cause trouble.
The play is divided into three main parts, Act I, Act II, and the Requiem. Each section takes place on a different day in present-day. Within Act I and Act II, the story is presented through the use of Willys flashbacks. This use of flashback is fundamental to the structure and understanding of the play. The story starts at present-day and Willy then lapses in and out of the past. Each flashback is somehow related to the present. Very often the contents of the flashback offer essential background knowledge for understanding why the present-day problems in the Loman family are occurring. Events from the past expose for the reader the situations that have led up to the present-day boiling point in the Loman household.
Throughout the play the Lomans in general cannot distinguish between reality and illusion, particularly Willy. This is a major theme and source of conflict in the play. Willy cannot see who he and his sons really are. He believes that they are great men who have what it takes to be successful and beat the business world. Unfortunately, he is mistaken. In reality, Willy and sons are not, and cannot, be successful.
Certain lines in the play point to this character flaw that is present in Willy, Happy, and (for a time) Biff. For example, Willy believes that to be well liked is the means to being successful. This is an illusion that Willy lives in. Also, on the literal level, Willy very often lapses into a flashback and appears to be reliving conversations and situations that occurred years ago. This itself is an inability to see reality.
This reality versus illusion problem eventually brings about Willys downfall. In the end, Willy believes that a man can be worth more dead than alive. Charlie, always the voice of reality tells Willy, A man isnt worth anything dead.
Willy is also unable to see change. He is lost in the modern era of technology. He says, How can they whip cheese? and is constantly In a race with the junkyard. Willy has lost at trying to live the American Dream, and the play can be viewed as a commentary to society. Willy was a man who was worked all his life by the machinery of Democracy and Free Enterprise and was then spit out mercilessly, spent like a piece of fruit.
There are a couple of obvious motifs in the play such as
The woods/jungle and diamonds Uncle Ben is the character who deals with the motif of the jungle (sometimes referred to by Willy as the woods) and diamonds. These motifs are symbols. The jungle is symbolic of life, and diamonds of success. As Willys life is crashing down around him, he says, The woods are burning! I cant drive a car! At the end of the play (and many other places as well) Uncle Ben refers to the jungle You must go into the jungle and fetch a diamond out.

The garden The idea of planting a garden is a major motif in the play. Willy is always discussing the idea of planting a garden, in Act I he says, The grass dont grow anymore, you cant raise a carrot in the backyard. At the end of the play, one of his last acts in life is his futile attempt at planting seeds in the backyard of his fenced-in house. The garden is symbolic of Willy needing to leave something behind for people to remember him by. Something that people will think about and remember him as a great man. Willy never achieved success in life, and he also never planted his garden. (He does in the end of the play, but it is assumed that will not grow.)

There is something magical and sometimes overpowering to the majority of mankind It is the thing that allows people to live in mansions with beautiful views, when the people in the underground society is forced to live in the many tunnels and passageways under New York City and to beg for their meals. “The Great Gatsby”
The three paragraphs from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” are presented in the middle of the novel. This passage comes just as the story starts to get interesting. Preceding this passage Gatsby and Daisy are again seeing each other for the first time in five years and we are hearing how they reacted. The passage shows us the opinion and regard that the narrator has for Gatsby. The arrangement of the comparisons, diction and judgement of Gatsby makes this evident.
Gatsby has told Nick about his life and now Nick is telling the readers how he sees Gatsby’s life. The first paragraph we see Gatsby as a young boy and how he grew up. In the second paragraph, we see Gatsby as a young man and how he went from day to day. In the third paragraph, we see Gatsby now. Nick explains to us what Gatsby goes through every night. This passage shows us a side of a person that we would not know about any other way. We get to see part of the background of one of the main characters.
The comparisons in this passage are used very eloquently. They help us to see Gatsby as Nick sees him and partially as Gatsby sees himself. Nick felt as though Gatsby came form Plato’s philosophy, for he was not born through sex but rather spiritually. It seemed as though Nick felt that Gatsby saw himself as the son of God. He truly compared him with him also. He went “about His Father’s business” (4). Fitzgerald used comparisons throughout his novel. He seemed to make sure that you were able to relate something to oneself. The one thing that these
comparisons did do is make you want to hold the characters up to a higher standard sometimes, and sometimes it lowered your expectations and thoughts about the character. Fitzgerald new the right times to put a comparison in and how he wanted you to see the character using the comparison.
The diction that Nick uses makes everything seem fine and happy while if you look up the words you find out how sad and somewhat depressing Nick is making Gatsby sound. In sentence number two Nick refers to Gatsby’s parents as shiftless. This gives the reader the idea that they might have been lazy and incapable of being good parents. Gatsby never really came out and said this, but that is how Nick saw it and described it to us. In sentence number four Nick refers to “meretricious beauty” if you were just reading along you would think that it was something good but really it means to make something look good that really isn’t so good. Another place Nick makes something look pretty, but it really is not is in sentence number eight. Nick refers to Gatsby as “overwhelming self-absorption” all this is saying is that Gatsby is self centered and only wanted to think about himself instead of what a girl might want. In the third passage, Nick uses “grotesque and fantastic conceits” (10). All this says is that Gatsby had an exaggerated opinion of himself, he was very vain and these thoughts haunted him when he went to bed. This is not something that I would want to think about every night while drifting off to sleep. The words that Fitzgerald chooses for this passage really gets his point across and you really understand who and where Gatsby is coming from.
Nick states in the first Chapter “I’m inclined to reserve all judgements,” yet in this passage he does seem to give us his judgement of Gatsby. When someone gives you their opinion on another person, they are consequently judging that person. Therefore, whether Nick
realizes it or not he is judging Gatsby. Nick lets us now how he sees Gatsby’s parents and how
they probably were not suitable. He concluded that Gatsby became contemptuous of women because he dated them early in life. He tells us that Gatsby is a very self-absorbed person. If this is not a judgement than I do not know what is. He then told us of how Gatsby let his imagination take over and how he thought that the rock of the world was founded on a wing of a fairy. This makes me want to judge Gatsby as a weird and possibly unstable person, but it is not good natured to make a judgement on someone from one sentence that is told to us by a narrator. These passages let us now that Nick really does judge people and we now know how he judges Gatsby.
Readers are more likely to understand where Gatsby is coming from in the rest of the novel now that they have a view of his background. The passage from “The Great Gatsby” shows us how Nick regards Gatsby and in a way, you hear his regard for him as a man. He portrays his life as hard and turbulent and when someone has a life like that, you seem to admire him or her even if you do not originally like them. We are now more prepared to now about the rest of the affair and the attack that Tom makes on Gatsby. In retrospect, we feel pity for Gatsby when we find out how his life ends and then you remember how it began. He made something out of nothing all to be murdered. This passage lets us in on Gatsby’s life and lets us appreciate him and what he has accomplished, and how Nick saw him.

I race down the stairs. Plenty of time, simple operation, will take no more than 15 minutes. I glance at my watch. Perfect, then I have 5 minutes to make it to the travel agents. I glance at my watch again
I rush into theatre. The girl awaits me. I start the procedure. With shaking hands I cut into the skin. I glance at my watch- 15 minutes. Locate the bleed. Got it! Glance at my watch - 6 minutes. Stitch it up! Done! There is still a slight hole. I glance at my watch- minutes.
Oh well, I tell myself Wont cause any future problems and plus I have a holiday to book!

Emily and George are playing in the garden. The sun is shining. Charlotte is sitting in her room. Uneasy thoughts cloud my mind making sleep an impossibility. I look up through the sky-light at the stars which scatter the black ribbon of night. George is lying besides me, taking deep, soothing breaths. Still i find no sleep. The word Killer is repeated in my mind like a broken record stuck on the same song. i am physically and mentally exhausted but when i close my weary eyes the face of the yound girl floods into my vision. I set out in life to become a doctor. From a young age i always wanted to help people, always wanted to make their lives better. I never wanted to hurt anyone, didnt mean for this to happen. I will never be able to forgive myself. Sleepless nights are just the start of the pain and riducule i will have to endure . But the worst thing of all is the feeling of guilt.

At that point I thought of myself how I find discontentment in everything and here is this woman who once had the ability to see all the things I take for granted yet she is content. In fact the day of the interview I had to go to court for a traffic violation and pay an obscene amount of money. I thought about canceling the meeting with Ms. King because from my felt I have just had one of the worst days of my life. One of the things Ms. King expressed was that she had just began driving during the time she lost her sight. She admitted to at times wishing she could jump in a car to go buy her own groceries. Unfortunately, she states her driving privileges were taken from her without choice. When the interview was over hearing about all her trails and tribulation, I thought hasn’t the days of her life been worse than my days?

I thought about how I would think of my older single girlfriends and feared being single at their age. Now I’m staring to evaluate myself and I wonder why am I so preoccupied with things I have no control over. Could it be that I can only truly accept life itself, by accepting the events in my life?
By the end of the interview I was really starting to be filled with a lot of guilt. I was starting to feel more embarrassed over all the tedious things I fuss over in life. On the other hand how could a blind person not have any discontentment for life? How could she not feel sorry for herself? I obsessively pondered on the thought of what if I lost my vision. Would I have the remarkable strength to live a gracious dignified life or would I wallow in my sorrows. After, evaluating all my notes from the interview it became clear to me that in that tiny neat apartment live a soft spoken women with a story of compassion, love, understanding, and acceptance to tell. How could a blind person who can’t see the world we live in have better perception of it than me? As I conducted my interviews with Ms. King more and more questions raised in my head and I’m still pondering on them. I’m constantly imagining myself in her situation. I’m constantly wondering how come she is in this situation. Why cant schools run their own uniform shops? Then parents could sell items as their children grow out of them and buy used uniforms at a reduced price. To keep buying brand new uniform when there could be a nearly endless supply of used clothing seems very wasteful. If schools had their own uniform shop it would be easier and families would be saving more money. Families waste more money with uniforms because kids need cloths when school isn’t on. Like on weekends, special occasions and for when kids come home from school and change into their normal clothes because they like to be comfortable and out of the ugly uniform.
This is my first year at high school and I like everything about my school except the uniforms. A couple of years ago when kilts and blouses where aloud to be worn at high school I was very excited and couldn’t wait to go to St. Joan of Arc Catholic High school. Years past and the students which I mean who girls wore the kilts and blouses in a very appalling way. What I mean by that is blouses unbuttoned very low that you can see a lot of cleavage showing and the kilts were pasts their mid-thigh. What I mean is that they were worn inappropriately. Now that I am in high school I am very mad about the kilts not being there and same with the blouses. That is what I was looking forward to wearing when I got to my high school for the first year. So uniforms are not always a good idea because they can be worn inappropriately.

If someone were to walk into the school, like some other kid that goes to a different school and is not wearing the right uniform to your school the kid can be kicked out immediately. Another reason why uniform is good because your parents are saving a lot of money on clothes. What I mean by that is that they only have to buy uniforms for you. They won’t have t buy you a lot of expensive clothes. All they would have to buy is like three polo t-shirts, two sweaters and two-three pairs of McCarthy pants.
So I think that uniforms overall are a bad idea. But, that is my opinion on uniforms. I think there shouldn’t be uniforms in school and once again I think kids should be loud to wear whatever they want to wear. It a free world and no one can boss us around and tell us what to wear. Uniforms can be bad and good and it should be the kid’s decision if they want to were them or if they don’t want to wear them.
